I played crysis on max with hd4870 and C2D E8400. Had good framerate. There was a slightly lower resolution, but still.

Depends on what it means played on max.

40 fps is great on enthusiast graphic setting on crysis. Im sure you will be able to do 30+
I do 26 avg on gtx 460 1gb.

He's not maxing crysis on it.

I've got high settings on 1920x1080 and it's running smooth at 60fps on the GTX460 Palit Sonic Platinum, which is equivalent to a stock 470. The 5870 is equivalent to the 480, but not that big of a jump from the 470.

Money doesn't seem to be too much of an issue, so while you're at it, I recommend getting a SSD as your system drive (maybe also put your games on it if you have enough space). You'll experience quicker booting and applications starting faster, and generally shorter loading times for just about everything you do. Increases the subjective feeling of performance a lot.

Depends on what quality you want to play at, and if you have stuff like a monitor, mouse, and keyboard to transfer over.

I would get a Nvidia graphic card if I really want to play SC2 with less hassle. If you have the budget I would suggest a SSD to boot your windows as well.

LOL.

If you mean 1024x768 by "slightly lower" or 20fps by "good framerate", than yes I believe you 100%.

Four things I would say about this build are that

1) I would get an Antec 300 case or something with better airflow. It's also half the price.
2) I would buy the XFX Radeon simply for the double lifetime warranty. Preference though; performance won't change.
3) I would ditch the sound card unless you plan on buying a $500 pair of headphones to go with it. Motherboard audio is pretty damn good these days, and you won't notice a difference if you're just using a normal pair of headphones or speakers.
4) Most importantly is probably your PSU. You don't need anywhere near a 1000w PSU to run that system, or any system you will use in the next ten years. Even with Crossfire 5870s you would only need an 850w PSU to run it. Pick up the Corsair 750w and save yourself some money.

Otherwise, here's the last build I did. Runs both games you want at max settings (well, Crysis at as max as it can be).

I ordered the 5870 separate so it's not on that list. Honestly, I feel like my system was overkill for SC2 and pretty much every other game I own :/

Yeah, that will easily max out either of those with framerate to spare. I'm kinda jealous of your 5870, but you need to OC that beastly processor. My i7-860 is running at 4.0GHz right now, I'm sure you can beat that

depends on the resolution but anything more than a gtx460 1gb is overkill for sc2 even on ultra.

once again, it depends on resolution but i've read reviews on tomshardware, gearreview, etc, those sites and they've consistently said sc2 doesnt need more than a gtx460

surprisingly tho; sc2 does depend heavily on higher clocked cpus since the game only uses 2 cores maximum.

I think you can probably do it. I have an Asus G73 i7 and I can actually run SC2 and WoW both on highest res setting AT THE SAME TIME. On two different screens ofc.

If you are planning on keeping it for 5years, might be worth waiting a month or whatever since 6xxx series are coming out.

Also, SSD! Definitely worth, even a small one that just has room for OS/a few games

Awesome, I will definitely look at SSDs and wait for the 6xxx series to come out. This system is about $1500 so quite a bit more than 800. I found the X-fi Titanium for $120 btw so I guess if onboard is very good, it's up to me if it's worth it or not.

LOL.

If you mean 1024x768 by "slightly lower" or 20fps by "good framerate", than yes I believe you 100%.

I think I played it on my native screen resolution which is 1280x1024 or something like that. FPS was around 40 IIRC.. maybe slightly lower was a slight exaggeration, but anyway - I played through it and the game was utter crap.

Meh. I have a 5770 slightly overclocked and using a custom graphic setting that is equivalent to enthusiasm graphic and I am running at 24-30 fps with 2x antialiasing at 1680x1050.

5870's power is similar to two 5770 combined.

I'd say you'd have no problem, if you are willing to tweak your game with a little optimization mod.

As for SC2, you will be smoking this game.

Are you posting these specs just to brag?

Haha no I haven't bought it yet is why I'm putting it out there. I saw that SC2 requires a high cpu and Crysis needs a really high gpu so this is what I came up with..

Crysis on max is easy with that setup. I played Crysis on max on my 5850+i5, it was fine.
