If you have a desktop, keep it for gaming and buy a cheaper laptop that is more mobile for school. No point in having 2 machines to game when you can only use one. And laptops are over priced, especially alienware. You're gonna pay approximately $500 more then you should for there logo on it.
Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

Ok first of all the guy wanted an alienware m11x which is 11.6 inches, 17.3 inches is not even remotely close to that.

The product he linked to was also 17 inches btw.

An of course you are gonna find better specs in a 17", the reason the m11x is so expensive is that they pack good hardware in a SMALL laptop. Put the same hardware in a 15" laptop and it'd be half the price.

I challenge you to find a 15 inch laptop with 9800M GTS that costs $700.

....
you may want to reread what I wrote

Anyways the Gateway is a marvelous laptop but it's not what sLiniss is looking for. it's like he said "hey guys what do you think of this motorcycle" and you're saying "well it's nice but this car is cheaper and has way more features"

orgolove, my comparison was purely an example which I compared my friend's m17x choice to the asus as the specs can be matched quite accurately.

But here's an example OP might have a prudent use for:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220746

For the almost same price you get a 17" screen opposed to an 11" AND 4gb ram to 2gb (which more than make up the slight lower cpu than the m11x's). And guess what? THEY BOTH HAVE THE SAME GPU.

starfries, I customized a m15x with similar specs with a worse GPU as the m11x's. The 15" wasn't even close to half the price. The 15" actually costs about 50% more.

EDIT: I think the analogy that a motorcycle is to an 11" as a car is to a 17" is totally wrong. It might actually be closer to say that the car is to a desktop, but the analogy is wrong nonetheless. I mean, how else are you going to carry an 11"? You're probably still going to carry it in a backpack or a laptop bag the same way you would a 17".

Dell Alienware definitely produces top of the line computers. Although the prices have gone more reasonable, they are still pretty beastly. I compared the recent computer that I bought off Newegg with an Alienware one with the same specs. It turned out to be $1500 vs $4000, and I'm getting better hardware from newegg. I think putting the label 'gaming computer' on a pc really makes the price skyrocket.

I agree with you, a computer I was looking at on Newegg was 900$ and it was amazing. Then I actually looked up all of the parts separately because I wanted to upgrade the graphics card and it was even cheaper! So yeah, the people you are paying to put together your machine need to make a living so it is more expensive, I'm talking about desktops because those are extremely easy to put together but laptops are a different story. If you do not know how to make a computer go with this, if you are tech savvy then I would suggest making your own.
Why would you ever choose failure, when success is an option.

Yeah the "half" thing was a huge exaggeration lol, you're right that if you want Alienware the 11" is cheaper. But if you just want the specs of the m11x and you're fine with 15" or up you can get them for cheaper in a consumer HP or Dell laptop.

Do yourself a favor and DONT buy that piece of shit 11' alienware laptop -_- Playing on that has been by far, my least pleasant gaming experiece. If you have a 19' monitor, it's like playing on windows mode a quarter size of your screen. And widescreen is fail. The only good thing I have to say about that model is that it's portable. That's pretty much it.

I'm actually in the market for this laptop; reading reviews, doing a bunch of research, finding the best deal. Lots of good things but yes the screen is kind of small, but I'll just bring an external monitor if I ever want to play at home.

Still on the fence between the Alienware M11x and the MSI GX640, but the mobility should be great for going back to school.

Didn't anticipate this much debate over this. I have to agree with starfries though... most of you guys are showing me big laptops. I guess when it comes down to it the 11 inches is best for my scenario. It is a laptop that I can carry around easily on campus. But when I'm gonna sit down and game, I can plug it into an external monitor in my room.

fitting a gaming-grade hardware in such small laptop is difficult
you are going to either pay a lot for it or get a shitty hardware

As I said before, good luck trying to run SC2 at max settings for more than 30 min on an 11 inch laptop running 335M. I predict burnout within two years. Lawl gaming on an 11 inch heat sink ROFL

$1000 for a computer with no dvd drive... hmmm. You know, I realise that USB and internet downloads are starting to make CDs obsolete, but what if you ever want to rip something, or someone from the 90s travels forward in time to give you a mix CD of their favourite Beach Boys songs?

You're gonna kick yourself.

Dude I have an Alienware m11x, it's amazing. You will NOT regret the decision at ALL, it runs a lot of todays games at decent FPS and SC runs in low settings at around 40-45 FPS which is fine.

EDIT: And if you are using an external monitor, you can adjust the resolution seperately, so the guy above who said it was like playuing in 1/4 of windowed mode or w/e is wrong, I play SC2 on my 23 inch LED monitor just fine at like 1800x1080 or whatever it is

I still think Alienware is sinfully overpriced :/

Plus I enjoy looking for the best P/P component.

Maybe I'm just cheap.
