So I'm going to Korea tomorrow and I am so hyped! I haven't been there in 8 years, and I'm glad I get to go on another year of World Cup! And also to see family, meet up with friends, etc. But what I really wanted to know was about shopping there- of course it depends where I buy, but I have heard from a few friends to just bring an empty luggage bag and buy a lot of clothes from there because it's cheap while another person told me that the prices are low for a reason (meaning that the quality is bad)

And please give me any other advice for shopping; experiences you went through, best/worst places to go, or anything else in general about Korea. Thanks!

yeah the shopping culture in korea has two extremes. on one hand you will find really, really cheap clothing but it obviously lacks the quality. (at places like local retailers, subway terminals, etc) on the other if you are shopping at a mall for well-known brands, they will be VERY expensive.

honestly, anything you can buy in korea (clothing related), you can buy in the u.s. for a much better price. things in korea rarely go on sale compared to the u.s. and is kinda stupid to buy clothes in korea. things like accessories like hello kitty crap and the cutesy shit that girls like (like cute mechanical pencils and notebooks, etc) you can only find in korea.
Is it in you?

I love buying the cheap stuff (especially cheap comfy T-shirts) to wear at home or while working out or underneath my outside clothes. Look for comfort more than anything else, because if you think a certain design looks really cool, it might get ruined after a few runs through the washer (although this has never happened to me).

but yea don't buy expensive shi-ite like jeans and stuff from "regular" or "status-y" brands; a pair of polo jeans can be many times more expensive in korea than america. if you're interested, you can find out what kinds of clothes your relatives like and bring them a pair or two through your luggage... they might appreciate it :o

You could find those cutesy stuff in Chinatown or those stores.

Wrong, wrong, wrong - we have sales here just like everywhere else. Also Hello Kitty accessories, and other cute items are freely available in the UK, US, Japan, Singapore etc etc etc. The stationary culture is more well developed here than in England at times, but that's still totally incorrect.

Oh the shopping front - most of what other commenters have said is correct. Cheaper items usually lack quality, but they're *so* cheap it doesn't matter. If you want clothing quickly, and inexpensively then try one of the huge shopping malls such as HiAPM (I think it's in Dongdaemun) or Miglione in Myeongdong. They have floors specifically for Men or Women plus accessories floors. Even cheaper clothing is available in Namdaemun. If you're looking for brands try Gangnam, Myeongdong etc.

My only advice is to haggle. Everything that everyone here said is pretty true that cheap clothes = cheap quality, but who the hell cares!

You can haggle prices for mostly everything that doesnt have a brand name. Best part IMO. And yes, go to Dongdaemun for some epic stores.

Is Korea cheaper than Japan ? Cuz last time I've been to Japan, price has dropped like crazy compared to the last decade.

i find shopping in korea very confusing and annoying and stressful. But maybe I just don't like shopping in general.
Can't believe I'm still here playing this same game

I was in Fukuoka in January and I found it pretty pricey compared to how cheaply you can shop in Korea. However, I didn't know where to go for the bargains, but I do here - so maybe it has become cheaper

looking back in this thread, was curious about something

what do you guys consider expensive clothing?
hopefully can get a response before i go for the airport today.

around my area the places i shop at usually have these prices:
10-20 for a shirt in general. the best ones at my favorite store (urbanoutfitters) are for 20
40-50$ jeans H&M, dunno about pants in general. forgot
hoodies/sweaters for 30-40ish

thats the general pricing. sometimes i get lower prices, sometimes higher.
would this be more expensive or cheaper in korea?

i dont buy designer stuff. i just want nice straightcut jeans, a shirt with a cool, funny design. i love shirts with animals so even if its just a simple panda on a plain white shirt i'd buy it. cute things like that. i spend most my money on hoodies/sweaters cause i wear them the most. probably won't need it in korea since it'll be during summer but i wear them like 8-9months a year so might as well buy.
are these things cheap there?

excuse my incoherent block of texts, rushing to type this as i prepare for my trip lol

Those prices are pretty similar to here from what I've seen so far. And yes, there are not a lot of designer clothes, and most are weird designs and little mottos that make no sense whatsoever but they still look nice.

Shoes are cheap too, but unless you're at a brand shoe store, you're going to be looking at a bunch of fake shoes.

There are a ton of places to go shopping in the underground places, it's crazy. Have fun
