update - FIXED THIS SHIT, ALL IS WELL

My video card is running way too hot. I actually am running
2 radeon x1950 cards (they might be different, like one might be XT one might be pro but im not gonna take em out to look just now). I am running them together with crossfire

One of them idles at like 55c. Which kinda seems hot but my case doesn't have the best airflow. And it idles at this 55c with the fan running at 13%.

Now, the other one, it idles at 80ish. I downloaded ATI tools to change fan settings and put fan at 100% and it sitll won't go under 70c. This is doing nothing, 70c. WTF.

I guess I am gonna take it out and clean it but it shouldn't be THAT dusty.

It will play games but then quickly overheat. Otherwise I can use my computer fine it just runs super hot.

So, is there anything in particular I should do other than disconnect the fan/heatsink and make sure it's clean of dust?

oh, and neither of them are overclocked.

hmmm, something else interesting - simply opening ATI tools seems to make my card go up 5-10 degrees. wtf.

is this a recent problem? Or something that you only noticed recently?
Did you download new drivers recently? Add any other new hard ware?
Clean it out with compressed air and the rest of your case, and maybe post the temps after htat

no new hardware, it's a problem that seems like it's been slowly getting worse and worse. At first the cards ran great but over the span of my first year with the computer it seems like they quickly started overheating more and more and since then it's been all downhill. But maybe that's cuz games are getting more and more demanding.

I feel the air coming out of the fans on the cards and the air doesn't feel nearly as hot as ati tools reports.

Also, ATI tools reports that the GPU on the card is like 75-80 and reports that the temperature measuring chip on the card is like 60. Is that normal?

One other thing that is weird but could be of note is that I have some major issues when booting my computer up in the mornings. Long story short it behaves very weird, sometimes it freezes up, sometimes a component of my computer doesn't turn on. Sometimes it turns on and then turns off after doing nothing for a couple minutes. But eventually after starting it 5-15 times it will start up just fine and work the rest of the day even if I turn the power off for a while.

My buddy told me his computer did this when it was having power supply issues. And I also read that power supply problems can make ur cards run hot (i don't know why but thats what i read).

The only thing about this is I have what is supposed to be a very, very nice PSU already.

Ok, nvm, I don't have any idea currently. Try other ways of measuring temperature and/or get another version of Ati tools.

ok while I've got you guys here, when I set up crossfire for these cards, I never did anything with these crossfire "bridges" ive been reading about. I never connected one of these "bridges" between both cards. (but I also don't even remember seeing a spot to connect said bridge).

Is this something I need to have lol

as the report shows i guess the one i thought idles much cooler has heated up considerably

aaaand.. it looks like my cpu is running super hot too yes?

it puts my cpu cores at 84-85 C is that safe?

I don't recall ever haivng issues with my cpu getting too hot. and my computer should turn off if it does.

My GPU (2600 XT) idles at around 60-65c. Would not be surprised if two cards close together heat up quite a bit more than that.

As long as under stress the core does not hit like 90 you should be fine.

Oh and your cores actually do seem hot. iirc you'd want to see them at around 60c max (idling). Airflow problem?

Edit: Apparently some people even consider 60c hot, I guess it depends alot on your model.

Is this something I need to have lol

If your bridges are the bridges I'm thinking about then aren't they like a necessity for crossfire? Well, atleast one?

maybe these bridges are something that came out for later cards? I don't ever remember having them and I can't see a spot on my card for them.

Oh, and as for airflow problems... I don't have the best airflow at all and I suspect my case is horribly designed but could airflow effect it THAT much? how hot is 39c airflow

ok, cleaning time. I will be back.

Ok I don't wanna bump this but there was dirt/dust/cobwebs (yes literally cobwebs) stuck inside the heatsinks of both my vid cards and the processor lol

took them apart (whic hwas a bitch), cleaned em out, now everything is better
