Shit, I must remember what I call my own blogs... Hopefully a mod can rename it quickly!

while i do believe wale's attention deficit was a good album, i still think that wale's previous mixtapes such as "hate is the new love" and "100 miles and running" were waaay better. it sort of sucks that in hip-hop some artists need to stoop down their true potential just to get the least bit of recognition. compare a top wale song like "strings" or "pot of gold" to "chillin." there is such a huge difference between the quality (chillin is just so bad...)
although i admit wale's works that are released in public (not played on radio) are so much better. recently for example his song called "letter."

I agree with you that his mixtapes are excellent, but I'm not sure if they're better than Attention deficit as albums. Attention Deficit has some songs on it that I don't like as much (Chillin' being one of them), but as an album I think it's put together better than his mixtapes. His mixtapes are probably slightly better on a track by track basis, but I find it harder to listen to them as often, mostly because they feel like they're not paced that well.
Either way, I could just as easily have picked his mixtapes. They're all awesome

omg wow thanks Daigomi. I love this blog
The sample in the Wale song is from the Amelie soundtrack (Yann Tiersen is so great)

I freaked out when I first heard the Wale song :p And Yann Tiersen is the artist I've listened to the third most in the last five years (behind Chopin and Elliot Smith :p)

Well I just freaked out listening to it for the first time haha
Tiersen is one of my favorite musician, I just love everything he does

I liked the Lucky Soul song, gonna check out that album.
I've always kinda disliked The Pidgeon Detectives' sound though

love wale! keep up the blogs!

The Pigeon Detectives are hardly anything special in my eyes, it's such a common sound here
I'd have preferred The Wombats :p

I've always kinda disliked The Pidgeon Detectives' sound though I had the Lucky Soul on repeat for pretty much two whole months in 2007. For some reason it just always makes me happy listening to it.
What I like about Pigeon Detectives is that they're one of the few new bands that still has the lo-fi sound that indie started out with. I mean, I enjoy the Klaxons and Editors as much as the next person, but there are few indie albums I enjoy more than Is This It from The Strokes. The Pigeon Detectives just make me think of that a bit, their fun, straightforward, and they just make music for young people. Exactly what indie should be.

In SA we very rarely get British indie (except for the biggest groups like Arctic Monkeys), so to me it makes a nice change from what I'm used to. That said, I still think they're better than most bands with a similar sound

Pigeon Detectives are just very over hyped Libertines imitators though. I need to get Libertines! I keep thinking that I should get them, and I keep forgetting to do it. I'll let you know what I think once I give them a listen Also, speaking of Doherty, is Babyshambles worth a listen? I've also been meaning to give them a try too.

I'd have preferred The Wombats :p You seriously prefer The Wombats? Haha, I find them to be very fun, but their lyrics are so absolutely horrid it drives me mad! Basically:
"I fell in love with a girl" "I fell in love with a dentist" "I fell in love with a girl at a dance" "I fell in love with a girl when I was six" "I fell in love with a stripper"
I do like them, but they can just get too much for me :p

Wow, I hate the wombats so much.
"This is no, bridget jones."
nothing better sums up my opinions about them. And come on, anyone that rips off babyshambles is ripping off the libertines twice over.
|
I can understand the dislike but as said they're entertaining! I got to see them at Glasto festival 2 years ago and they really made getting too get to the stage worth it (read: english weather + fields = mass mud).
I find Babyshambles pretty drab though, that old 'Fuck Forever' single shows everything I don't like about them
thanks for continuing the music blogs btw, they're definitely appreciated

Thnx for the tips. However I don't feel that Pigeon Detectives song is anything like classic British indie sound (any of the kinds really). It's very modern sounding to me, and it has the same problem as many other bands in the way that it sounds too polished when the music is supposed to be raw.

The Tenhi album is one of my favorite albums ever. It's just sheer acoustic perfection.

For those of you that are just browsing, I personally liked "Lucky Soul" the most
Thx, Dai for the recommends

I can't find anywhere to get lucky soul
