PC problem

About 2 weeks back, my monitor has been acting up. There was a time that when I turn my pc on, it goes to the normal boot up process and when it goes to the log in screen, it goes black. The PC still has power (mouse and keyboard lights are on), I restarted it then it gave me the usual, it showed the scan disk process and it turned black again when it was supposed to show me the log in screen. I restarted it for the third time then it was ok. The next day (Sunday 2 weeks ago I think), it was the same story, except that I had to restart several more times. Monday, gave me the same story, I lost my patience and restarted at will. Then I lost my pc there, upon turning it on, it gave me 1 long beep followed by 3 short ones. Thinking that it was my video card that was acting up, I swapped it with the 2 cheap ones I have here but to no avail. I was now thinking that it was the monitor that's busted, that wasn't the case. The laptop we have at home can output to the monitor no problem, and there was also a time when my pc started to screw up that when the monitor tries to restore display from standby mode, there are black horizontal and vertical lines on the display that eventually fade, there wasn't any of that weird thing when the laptop displayed through the monitor.

So, any ideas? I think my pc's too old and is need of replacement...:|

Look up the beep codes in your motherboard's manual.

Sounds like a generic device error. Give us the motherboard beep codes for your manual and we'll figure out what it is.

According to the manual I found on the net, one long beep followed by three short ones means that "Video card not found or video card memory bad"..

but I switched the video card three times already and even switching the ports I used...hmmm...

I had my monitor like that too. Before my comp wouldnt even turn on, but it lights up and everything. It was just the monitor.

I had to get it sent back but it wasnt fixed. They ended up replacing mine.

You still got a warranty?

With this information, try re-seating your RAM? It might have gotten loose and improperly in the socket. Just take them out and put them back in.

It also could mean one of the sticks of RAM is dead-- trying taking one out, turning on the computer, and doing that for each stick.

Thanks for the tips guys, maybe it's the ram because I tried different video cards for different slots, it's unlikely that all the cards I tried are broken.

I'll have to do this tomorrow though.
