Using a tent would save you 10 - 15€ a night. At least for german camping sites / hostels. I recently cycled 330 km in two days from Berlin to Usedom, the latter being a small holiday island. I dont know about your training, but for relaxed touring, I personally wouldnt want to make trips over 100km/day.  Especially beacuase there aren't always good cycle paths and you'd have to travel using federal highways.Having made some small excursions within a 200km radius, I've at all times had to ask for direction at some point and never been disappointed. Do not camp on your own outside of camping sites (can be forbitten and freaking expensive if you're caught); also doing so, you avoid being alone and thus fucked if you run into some "aggressive people". A quick google maps "research" told me that from Vienna through Nuremberg via Berlin and Kiel, over Denmark to Sweden by ferry is gonna be like 2000 km. Thus its at least 20 days. Based on an average of 15 km/h, you will spend like 7 h/day on your bike, sleeping 8h, using 2h for tent and hygene, leaving you 7h for eating and sightseeing. So, if you want to "see something", get to know the countryside, the nature, I would say you'll need at least a month. At the moment, 1$ = 0.68€. Ergo your 1,2k are less that 850€. I'd say with 1000€ you should be on the safe side. Not including souveniers and whatnot, just living expenses. If you go camping of course. But I cannot give any information about prices in sweden or austria, havent been there for too long... If you're already coming over, you may also consider giving finnland a try. A friend of mine just visited the south and was all enthusiastic. Such beautiful nature...! Well, thats it for now, cant think of more at the moment, gotta get some sleep Feel free to ask stuff. Viel Glück! Nächste Sommer will ich nach Deustchland auch gehen. Wenn du nicht so viel Geld ausbgeben will, sollst du bei eine Herberge bleiben. Staying in a hostel shouldn't cost too much, but if you're really tight on money tenting could be even cheaper. I don't think safety should be too much of an issue. If anything, make sure you don't leave stuff around, because you wouldn't be the only TLer that's gone to Europe and had their wallet/bag stolen, etc. Good luck! | ||

http://www.oebb.at/en/index.jsp You can use the train schedule to map out where you can go using trains and later on getting the times right (maybe try using the german version of the site for learning purposes  ). There probably are more cities than one ever 50km, just being too small to get mapped.You can travel for a couple of days by train trough austria using this ticket and only paying an initial fare. http://www.oebb.at/pv/en/Travel_within_Europe/Eurail_Austria_Pass/index.jsp Unfortunately, I dont know any respective ticket for germany. You prolly should consider buying an InterRail ticket, giving you access to specific trains all over europe (http://www.interrailers.net/english/). Ever since its getting privatized, the german railway company (Deutsche Bahn) bleeds out their customers and fucks up the system... Well, whatever. From my point of view, its just too expensive just to get from south to north. Not to think about travelling for a longer period of time. So, if you decide on giving germany a try, there are several types of ticket to buy. If you're interested, in a couple of days, I can provide some links or explain anyway. Do you plan on crossing the austrian-german border through the alps by bike? I'd propose bus or train but have never taken anything but the former... | ||

Will this be your first time traveling alone? Do you have any friends you could go with? That may make it both safer and more enjoyable. * Granted, there are risks, but nowhere near what most people believe. You're probably safer hitch-hiking than you would be on a bike on the open road. | ||
