In our story campaigns it's a big deal when a character dies and sometimes people can get quite cross about it if the deaths were pointless or too unexpected. But, if it was a combat-focused campaign like you were saying then maybe they were expecting to die at some point or another and had fun with it. They were unhappy, but they played the session really well. Like, their RP has improved a bunch, they really went through the motions of getting things done before their adventure. The wizard was the most unhappy, cuz his character was doing some cool things (he had a cockatrice egg that was due to hatch soon). Regardless of the outcome, this was my favorite session because of the way they played. It was hilarious watching the 5 stages of loss set in. They ended up being good natured about it fairly quickly, but going through your first death is kinda shocking. There were several cultists and a ritual going on. If the party interrupted the ritual, it would slow/stop the summoning of the succubus, but they did not. By the time the succubus arrived, there were 3 cultists alive still. They fought, but they were clearly losing the battle. I ended up charming the wizard with the succubus (automatically failed save on charm if the target is 50 HP or lower), and then on his turn I made him cast burning hands over the entire party, killing them. So the wizard is still alive and under the control of the succubus. I think I'll have him make a return as a possessed third party villain with a treacherous cockatrice pet. | ||
