I think he was pretty careful with his army movement in order to be able to poke and not die.

Are you suggesting that there was a way for that army to not trade well in that scenario? I don't think there was a way foe that army to be killed in a manner so efficient that Marine had a real chance of doing a crippling counteratrack.
