It's the mentality. Koreans (and most Asians) have this camaraderie mindset that allows them to live together and practice and share strategies, tips, etc. Whereas Western countries like the US and most EU countries tend to have a more individualistic and laid-back mindset. Money and resources can only get you so much; it's the non-materialistic intangibles that make a difference in the long run.

There hasn't been any competition. A one-eyed man is king in a blind world. It's really good that Koreans are coming to these tournaments because it will mean the foreigners will stop getting paid for being bad.

Oh, I like this point of view. The danger is that people will just start giving up and say- well I'll never be as good as Koreans and will never win any money, so whats the point

HG Wells would disagree (his one eyed man was ostracised as a freak) and there is plenty of competition.

This isn't true. Total prize money is greater in Korea so far. Foreign scene might surpass Korea by the end of the year, but just barely.

You're wrong. Simply staying in Code S earns a ton of money relative to outside Korea.

Sir, you are wrong. Between MLG, NASL, IPL, Be-Line, IEM, ZOTAK, Black Dragon, ASUS Open, Dreamhack, Assembly, Gathering, Craft CUp, EG Masters CUp, GCTL, TSL, StarsWAR and many many more foreign scene has easily 2 times more money (IPL is going to increase the prize pool to 50k from 5k next season, so 3 times more by the end of the year)
So.. this Earth, nice planet you might say- WRONG!!

The numbers don't lie. Maybe. What may or may not happen in the future has little to no relevance to performance now.

The total amount of money is greater yes, but the sheer number of tournaments is much more taxing on players, having to prepare for many different events and then basically play tournaments games nearly every day to play in all of them, then there's traveling to events like Dreamhack and MLG, TSL finals etc...

Easier to just make a salary and focus completely on GSL.

Well there are lies damn lies and statistics. But the key thing to compare is the earnings of code A players which is the entry level for players venturing out to korea.

Last I knew only TSL pays their sc2 team salary in Korea. Many foreign teams do though.

1st of all- numbers lie all the time, I can tell you that as an economist.
2nd- it appears that you are correct. at the moment the total money given out is greater in Korea. I made a mistake of counting tourneys that havent happened yet (so by the end of the year we will be ahead)
3rd- that website only includes tourney wins, I believe if you factor in salary, stream money, sponsorships then foreigners will have more
So.. this Earth, nice planet you might say- WRONG!!

Nope, players like NesTea, MVP can snipe the GSL in their hands, but MMA, Moon, Losira and July need the tourneys like MLG so freaking bad, so they can play more and go outside Korea.

1: If you have a problem with the numbers, you should find better numbers (better numbers doubtless exist, but I have no clue where to find them). Your argument was derived from the prize money of tournaments, this is the best indicator of prize money of tournaments that we know of.

2: I really don't know, but my point holds still holds for current player skill.

3: No one knows just how much progamers earn through sponsorships and streams, and they aren't telling. There's a lot of costs like transportation that are also not factored in. If you can factor that stuff in, there's a lot of people on this website who'd want to know.
