Bomber beating up a bunch of foreigners + Noblesse, Coca, and DRG is not the same as Bomber beating Puzzle, MKP, then potentially MVP, NesTea, DRG, and Coca. Notice how the guy can't even make it to the semis in the GSL after 3 attempts, yet breezes to a title win at Raleigh. That alone should point to an huge overall skill difference, no? It's actually pretty hilarious how I even needed to point that out.

But he isn't top 10 in the GSL right now. Top 15 maybe, but not top 10. He's been getting back into form and if he can manage to shift some of that brilliant success from the event matches into the main stage I will be one happy fan. But for now, these guys in the top 10 (and Coca) have shown much better, much more consistent play lately.

If someone were to beat a group of players with a 70% win ratio and then another person did the same thing but one had all the wins in a row and then losses after then I don't really see a difference if I were to rank their skill levels. Championships matter for GOAT debates, but this is a power rank.

I thought the underlying assumption was that a GSL final is weighted more, not because it's in Korea or anything else, but due to the difficult road the two players will have had to take in order to make the finals. At least, that was my assumption when reading Fionn's opinion piece. I don't believe anyone with reason believes that a GSL finals is "worth more" just because it's a GSL finals. For example, in Tennis, it was always my belief the Grand Slams are "weighted more", in large part, due to the amount of 5 setters and quality of players that the winners have to go through, as compared to some random Masters Cup, where even the Grand final is a 3 set match, and where some guy ranked 30th in the world is a 10th seed.

Do tournaments like MLG, Arena of Legends, WCG and other non-GOM tournaments matter? Yes, but they are way undervalued below GSL and GSTL. then goes on to reason that because not everyone can afford to fly their players over/not everyone is lucky in MLG's free money prize draw it's marked down, whereas everyone can play in GSL. shame really. i don't think anyone's saying that if moon goes to dreamhack, beats up cupcakes and then beat DRG in the final due to ZvZ build order wins it should be OMG MOON WINS MAJOR TITLE, POWER RANK NOW that'd be silly. i think the point is that if july smacks up mc/huk/hero/random elite player from the open bracket/bomber/puma etc and takes MLG Orlando, it counts less than those results would in a GSL because nestea has better things to do than fly over to win $5k? edit - or even worse, if MC decided to abuse his SK partnership, walk the earth and take down four foreign tournaments in a month, he wouldn't be considered for more than a minor spot because he's in code B? come on now

I think the reason Fionn made such stipulations in this ranking is because those examples haven't turned into reality yet. Maybe in MLG 2012, when there are 16 Code S level players in the pools, and where the champion will have to battle through a bracket of comparable difficulty to Code S, will we perhaps see a change in the weighting formula. Because, as of right now, player X isn't going to go through world class players in the open bracket of MLG Orlando, nor beat up a bunch of Code S'ers en route to the championship. MVP came the closest, beating DRG, Boxer, Ganzi, MMA, etc. but even then, most of his wins in pool play were against the likes of Select, Moonan, Kiwikaki, and Machine. ...and yes, what MC achieved a few months ago, winning or going top 3 in a bunch of foreigner tournaments while beating up cupcakes, just isn't very impressive in my eyes. Perhaps Fionn did this power ranking with the wrong reasons in mind, but, using the biggest barometer that is the GSL Code S, is the right way to go.
