The best way to play is to become emperor of the HRE, disband it, save quit and then start up as whatever country you want.

Makes for an interesting game.

This seems really interesting, is this basically like the Total War series but with the emphasize on diplomacy, economy and other stuff like that, instead of having the emphasize on battles?

Heads up: Chronicles is currently on sale on steam for $7, though you gotta search around for it. Try clicking Divine Wind and following a link to Chronicles.

I'm currently having trouble learning the mechanics of the game. Read some of the manual but I keep getting distracted and go off to read something else. Just simply playing the game doesn't really help me learn because I think a neighbor is ripe for conquest and am quickly found wrong. For example, last game I was Naples and thought I could take out Sicily and didn't think Spain could do much about it. I was wrong.

I love these kind of games but find it so hard to play this one. When I play TW games I usually skip the battle and hang around for the diplomancy and management parts.

I know paradox makes these types of games like nobody's business. Just pumping these ones out like nothing.

if you think this game is complicated you should play hearts of iron 2
the interface looks simple enough but the game plays like an excel spreadsheet
in this game at least battles are determined by diceroll, not things like

-how supplied your guys are
-the terrain type
-the units you have
-the units affected by terrain
-the weather
-how pissed people are at you
-how pissed your people are
-how many troops you have
-how rested are they
-if you're crossing a river or bridge
-if you have air support
-if you have naval support
-if you are flanked
-if you are surrounded
-if you are attacking vs. defending
-your commander's skill
-your commander's specialty
-how many units are in the area
-presence of an hq
-if you have oil or not
-your tech level
-your "hardness"
-how experienced your troops are
-your technology tree
-how many directions are you being attacked in
-if the enemy has a fort in the area
-how good the roads are
-combined arms formations
-how fast your troops move
-if the enemy is dug-in or not
-if your commander has special tactics
-if you are attacking at day or night (and technology affects this too!)

i'm pretty sure i'm missing things as well, but that is a hearts of iron battle. And you're fighting these all the time. There are literally thousands of battles in a war.

Just got this game. A bit overwhelming but lots of freedom. Is there anything like a video tutorial of guide on what to do in the beginning of the game? I'm a bit lost there.

Step 1) Read the Wiki
Step 2) Pick Castille
Step 3) Turn off Lucky Nations (screw anyone who says otherwise, honestly there is no reason to do it unless you find staring at paint dry invigorating)
Step 4) Just fucking play. Honestly, this is the only way to learn. You will die. A lot. In fact, you will lose so much the game will fucking suck for the longest time. However, once you learn how to play, it gets amazing.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Now, I need some help from perhaps anyone who has experience in this.

I'm going on a bit of an endeavor. I'm going to be making every state in the United States its own independent country from 1399 with advanced tech groups and shit just to make a giant fucking clusterfuck, and add in realistic countries where they would be on the rest of the continent. Here are my two problems:

1 - The Wastelands

There are wastelands that take up the midwest / western part of the United States by a HUGE amount. Is there any way to remove these and make them territories? If I can't split them into individual territories but can at least make them habitable for a country, I can think of something instead of state names for them. Which leads into my second point:

2 - Borders

Some of the borders are completely nonsensical by today's standards. Is there a way to change the borders manually?

I was playing but I am so confused. I cannot build anything. I try to build manufactoy but it never builds. I click on the province and then on the bottom it gives me a picture to build manufactory and when I click on it, it go to another menu but the manufactory never builds.

So what form of government do you guys prefer. I've only got experience from Empires, Trade Empires (or whatever they're called. You know like Lübeck and Venice etc) and ofcourse feudal monarchies.
Basically what I'm looking for is a type similar to the trade empires where you can choose your leader somewhat, as for the past 50 years they've all been inbred crap leaders who basically have 3/3/3. Sadly I've got an extremely large country, and I like to stay on the aggressive, so trade empires won't give me much as the infamy keeps the trade income down anyway.

Anyone who has some experience in this?

I love how some people have the reading comprehension of a 1st grader.

I asked if it is possible to change the borders of the territory themselves and if there was a way to make a Wasteland not a Wasteland, not how to change the name of a province.

Btw do NOT buy Sengoku, I thought it would be similar to EU3 just with a japanese setting..but it's not =/ the game is impossible + extremely easy at the same time (on very hard difficulty) if you are ahead it's practically impossible to not win because you can just attack anyone and they do not stand a chance against you. The AI doesnt start plotting until you or another ai has declared himself as shogun, but at that time it is usually too late anyways.

The reason it is extremely easy and extremely hard at the same time is because if you are ahead you can kill anyone you want, you don't even need to do anything yourself you can just make your vassals take the land (Easier that way because then you don't have to hand out land afterwards) You only need to declare war then sit back and relax...BUT this also means the AI can do the excact same thing, so if you are behind it's impossible to get back in the game. Hopefully this will be fixed with a patch asap.

A game where the first thing you do is scout with a “worker”. Does that make any sense? Who scouts with a “worker”? That’s like sending out the janitor to perform recon, what general would do that? Retarded game.

You're probably better off asking at the EU3 forums, unless you get the TL wizard (R1CH) on the line, I doubt anyone can answer really as it seems pretty heavy.

Almost everything is moddable. The province borders are determined by .bmp files for instance, and you can also add more provinces and turn wastelands into provinces. It is just a question of using paint and notepad. For any questions about the game or modding, just go to the official forums. They are very active, with lots of people who know everything about the game. There are many threads on how to do this already, and also mods that do this for you.

Either that, or he doesn't have a magistrate or the right tech requirement, or he is confused by the fact that manufactories take 5 years to build.

You can't disband the HRE if you are the emperor.

Yeah, more or less. Combat is very abstract and is more looked at from the strategic point of view (how should I arrange my armies, etc) rather than any sort of tactics. In fact, the game tries to push you into fairly simple army compositions, although you can still mix it up with a bit of effort if you want to (not that there's any particular reason to).

In the case of single player, you can use the Ledger (go to National Statistics and click "next" a few times) to get to the Armies and Navies pages which will tell you the army compositions of every nation, which you can then sort by number of certain unit types, number of total units, manpower, country name etc. When you intend to declare war, make use of that to check on what you're going up against, and if an ally that might be called in (it tells you everyone who will probably join in the Declare War menu item) is far bigger than the person you are attacking, is the leader of a PU of the person who you are attacking, or has vassalized the person you are attacking then check their allies too since odds are they will become the war leader and call in their allies. Also, everyone who wars you will automatically bring their Vassals and PUs along for the ride. Alliances can cascade (A calls B who becomes the war leader, B calls C who becomes the war leader, etc) but as of 5.1 it's very rare to see more than one transfer of leadership in a war to address how ridiculous cascading alliances could become.

In multi player, it's pretty much impossible to tell how much stuff people have (although you learn to guess reasonably accurately), but you can "scout" their coasts by running some ships past it while you are at peace, and if you don't mind pissing them off you can try to use a spy to Infiltrate Administration in their capital (basically gives you full vision of them for a few years).

HoI is definitely more complicated, but there's still several nuances to EU3 combat that aren't evidence at first. Terrain/river crossings/beach landings do matter, as well as leaders (especially early game), ratio of unit types, morale, discipline, and how your units' pips are distributed.

That's because there's no building called a "Manufactory"; Manufactories are a class of buildings, so clicking Build Manufactory opens the menu to pick the manufactory you want to build. They're called Refinery, Weapons Manufactory, Naval Equipment Manufactory, Textile Manufactory, Fine Arts Academy, and University in that order, and all require 14-16 in their respective tech (Trade, Land, Naval, Production, Government, Government) except Fine Arts Academy which requires Government Tech 21.

Sooo... The firs game i play "till the end" is now in the late 17th century and basically over...:

The big powers just seem to fall apart themselves... They also are behind in "Land"-Technology (since the beginning of the game I invested nearly everything in Government/Production/Land and basically nothing into Naval/Trade).

"France" as a whole looks a bit like in the beginning of the game, just witheout or nearly no "France" itself. Burgundi is also small. There is no "major" power there, the big france countries have like 5-6 provinces... Provence wanted to get big but had a war with me and I forced it to release about anyone so theire back to square 1...

Castille is pretty big, but looks like it will go the way of France soon, most of Africa (which it basically owned at some point) has successfully revolted and the "black stripes" in Europe don't look to promising. It's Asian (Arab) part is also getting smaller and smaller... Black stripes > Castille :p.

Austria was the "only" power that actually deserved it's name and seemed to have itself under control, but as my direct neighbor we had constant conflicts which I finally won (they still got around 10 european provinces, 6 being "classical austrian" the others are scattered all around Europe).
No one else matters and never really did (well some did, but the only really hard war of Switzerland vs Austria/Bohemia/Bavaria sent most of them insignificance while Austria and me stayed strong back then...

Eastern Europe?
Is just way too far behind in technology, it's like fighting Arabs... A force of 50k could probably take over Ukraine/Russia whatever because they just don't stand a chance... And I could right now muster about 750k men....

Well, let's see how big I can get until it ends .

Btw: Colonies seem really, really weak? I mean, they barely deliver any money.. Whats the point? A single "good" european province is worth like 20 "arab provinces?"...

So for the question. Colonies can bring in a butt ton of money. Especially once they're cores. What you need to do is to keep the entire way from the colony to your main land free from pirates. Those will afaik stop the income almost entirely. It's kind of like when you're sending colonists to horde countries. If an enemy unit stands in a choke points, no colonists can get through. The best way to do this is to stick one ship at every other sea tile / port next to land. It's usually not too much of a hassle.
Also what you need is cores. Iirc a non core province only brings in like 10% of the tax income of a core province.
The good part with colonies and arab provinces is that you usually don't have to pay much, or any infamy to get them, so basically you can get huge areas and just let them bring in what they can.

Another tip for quick abusive expanding in Europe is claiming thrones of weak heirs. When I play France I usually try to get castille and aragon in a union under me asap, and then focus on vassilizing the HRE voters to get casus bellis on all countries that tries to expand with almost no infamy penalty.
I bet i can maı̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̨̨̨̨̨̨ke you wipe your screen.

Casuas bellies are really not an issue anymore and infamy is really not that scary anymore when no one dares to go to war with you (or just gets overrun if they do) .

I got:
"Nationalism" on everyone that has the same culture (That makes basically everything german/austrian "mine").
Tribal War or whatever it's called on all the Arabs or/and something due to being "protector of the Christian faith".
The "French Revolution" Idea which lets me declare war on everyone that has not the same government form...

My problem is.. That I did not realize that I actually had to "use/select" the Casuas Bellies until the 16th century... So I took full Infamy hits all the time in the beginning of the game which made expanding SLOW (because back then, I had to be careful, getting ~15-20 Infamy could mean instant "game over" with Austria/Burgundi as neighbours and I had to nearly bankrupt myself once by "paying" Austria to like me)

Hm.. Now that you say it, there is a pirate ship turning up every now and then (the Arab countries are cores now but still bring like nothing) but... it's to the south and there is access thru the mediterran sea... Can this still destroy the income?

Btw: Is it possible to build the Suezcanal if I own these provinces? Shipping around Africa sucks :p.
