Umm, keep trying if you want to but if he's too hard headed to follow your advice then just tell him you're not gonna waste your time if he's not willing to listen and learn. It's about all you can do really.

Tell him to choose Nature's Prophet, buy all the recommended items and then fight in the jungle for 45 minutes. When he comes out he'll have a full item build and can carry ezpz.
I mean, Tobi does it.

You can always let him get into the basics on his own first. Teach him some basics like how to move, how to buy items etc and then just leave him.
Either he will leave in frustration and not bother you again or he will persevere and learn that dota is a deep game and that he needs to be humble and start learning.
People learn at different rates. And jumping into a new game and be told to do certain things that may seem counter-intuitive to some people might turn them off from your advice. Leave them time to discover things for themselves. Let them enjoy the game, even on a superficial level, without you trying to bludgeon them to death with information.
TLDR: Teach him bare basics, and let him discover game on his own. After some time, come back and maybe then he will be more receptive.

If he is playing Dota and you´re skyping with him, just give him simple advice about his hero.
Like in your example if he plays AM tell him "Blink teleports you to where you click" and then wait for him to ask another question.
It´s easier to feed people like that information in really small bits.
I still know from experience that you can´t absorb too much information when you´re just learning the game. So keep it to small bite sized infos and then just sit back and wait.

most staff of TL actually play dota2. i think most who live in the TLHQ played a lot too. If you recall there is a recent youtube video of R1ch curve hooking a razor with pudge. Hotbid also introduce himself in /r/dota2 and left his Dotabuff profile over there.... Kennigit seems very knowledgeable when it comes to dota2 heroes and he talks about it on his twitter everytime a patch hit.
Everything is pretty much obvious that they are gearing themselves to pick up a dota2 team, just having a hard time finding a good stable team. (not that im retracting any of my previous statements opposing this matter)
