I am a right handed man. This is nothing unusual, since the majority of humans are right handed too. However, what we right handed people don’t realize is how much we use our left hand. Or maybe you do, but I sure as hell didn’t.
Putting on a shirt, buttoning your pants, cooking dinner, showering; there is not really much we do that does not require both hands to do efficiently. Without one of your hands, you take way longer to accomplish anything and everything. Even working becomes difficult. I've hurt my legs in the past and I can say that without a doubt I'd much rather hurt those again than my arms. My quality of life for both is/was terrible, but this is 10x worse.
Luckily for me, I’m a teacher so I really only need the use of my right hand to perform my necessary job duties. Anything I struggle with, my students are more than willing to help me with, which is great. They’re all very good kids and I connect with most of them on some level.
As a result, many know that I am a gamer. This is something that I lost the ability to do when I broke my wrist. Or at least that’s what they thought. Here’s a conversation I had with one of my nerds.
“Mr. S. don’t try to play any RTS games with your broken wrist. I tried when I broke my arm and it’s impossible. Are you sad that you can’t play?”
“It’s funny you mention that because I am trying anyway”
“Wait, what? You can’t use the keyboard, that’s impossible.”
I’d like to think that’s his way of respecting my ability to play well since when I was a PC noob, I totally only used the mouse to play. I went on to explain my setup and he was amazed that I even tried. He walked out of class ready to play some superiormoba knowing that his teacher is playing something similar with just one hand. He loved it.
So, while I don’t have use of both my hands and life is hard to navigate, my broken wrist has allowed me to challenge myself and connect with my students on yet another level. At least I have that going for me, even if I can’t support for my life or play heroes that have less than 2 passives.
But this blog was way too serious, so here’s a clip of me being “special.”
And here’s a video of me being awesome.
I am a spaz in the early game but somehow it comes together lol. This past week of one handed doto has me at a ~70% winrate with TONS of comeback wins as a result. That luna game was one of my favorite comebacks if you ever get the chance to check it out. I streamed it if you're into watching my frustration.
Thanks for reading!
