Hey guys,

I'm in a bit of a lul in my musical self-training and I feel rather burned out about it.

Instead of working towards something, I'm wasting my time consuming pointless media, browsing for games I'm never going to play, items I'm never going to buy etc.

I'd love to learn how to build something, or how to tinker with things, or something competitive.

What I don't want to do:

- stare at a computer screen too much (like in programming, visual design etc.)
- spend large amounts of money I don't have (like travelling)
(- get into anime or other kinds of cartoons)
To placate the weebos: I don't want more media consumption (TV shows, graphic novels and what have you).

What makes for a good hobby in my opinion:

- delayed gratification over instant satisfaction (which rules out most video games)
- open ended, never run out of things to learn
- accessible, there should be books or other media that help me ease into it
- you can work on it alone, but also share with people
(- maybe at some point make a little money with it to get back your investment)

What I considered:

- learn another language
- get a motorbike license and get into cross biking (extremely expensive)
- cooking (I've already booked a course at the community college, but that's starting in October)
- chess (that's my fallback one)
- tennis (though that's probably out of my league, money wise)
- woodworking (living on 20m2 and not owning any tools might be the biggest problem)

What else could I 'tinker' with, if not woodworking?

Your opinion on this subject is... well I don't even know what to say. Manga/Anime is a medium just like books, photography and movies. There's perverted stuff to be found in each of them. There's good stuff to be found in each of them. You might not be looking in the right places.

A colleague of mine does some model building, he designs and sells his own models, and goes to competitions. I have no experience on the matter, but it seems like that would fit all your requirements.
If you have a good reason to disagree with the above, please tell me. Thank you.

I sincerely hope u never find a hobby and suffer from boredom your entire life. Such a shallow-minded person does not deserve any better.

Wow... The ignorance is strong in this one.

Warhammer might interest you. Tinkering combined with painting combined with actual tabletop game play with complicated rules and deep strategy.

So you want some advice from a video game community about non gaming activity ? I think you will not get many answers.

Take your guitar, plays "Arpeggios from hell" backwards.

Also

You just described music.

You can look at FuddX work too. He does balloon stuff. That's quite impressive what he does. You can go full modern art. Just pick so garbage, pile them up, throw stuff at it. Give it a name. Sell with sixteen zeros.

Good point, but I already play music like a madman.

Like, I practice the acoustic guitar a couple of hours a day, I practice the piano an hour a day, most of my idle time I spend listening to music and I'm just getting deeper into metal rhythm guitar. But as with all things, do something a whole lot of time and you get burned out.

Apparently he is making money, though that is with the revenue from a small online shop included where he imports model building stuff and sells it to other people. I suggest that you just look around and find out just how much it really costs.

Accoustic guitar ? Play that. You will not get instant satisfaction. Trust me.

You never get burned out of a passion. You get burned out from a hobby. So what you need. Is a passion. not another hobby

Also. You should edit what you said about anime. And read Gunmm

I play acoustic fingerstyle guitar, so obviously I'm familiar with all the great players and that's what I derive my passion from.
While I'm no Antoine Dufour or Andy McKee, I'm slowly getting there.

I love playing and even more than that I love progressing and expanding my horizon, so I get where you're coming from.

Yet I'm looking for something else to do as well. But I appreciate you trying to motivate me.

And I edited the anime comment.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate that certain anime genres give pedos something to watch that doesn't hurt real children like pornography does, so I'm not having a go at the medium.

It's just not something I'm interested in. Besides, I want to do something more active than watching videos and reading comics and then talk about how 'kawai' some twelve year old with giant saucer eyes is on reddit.

Japanese culture?

I have said nothing against Japanese culture, nor would I ever presume having a go at that.

It's the weebos that I find repulsive and creepy.

Now let it go, I'm not interested in anime and I'm not planning on investing any time if there's a whole exciting world of interesting things out there to learn.

Musicians are just drunks and drug abusers. Classical musicians are just snobs who pretend that wine culture is somehow fancy and look down their noses at "lower-class" people. All bikers are like the hell's satans. All Americans are obese. All women are feminist nazis. All men are misogynists.
I could go on, but I think thats enough.

Now If you want actual hobby suggestions, I would suggest Drawing.
It fills all these requirements:
- delayed gratification over instant satisfaction (which rules out most video games)
- open ended, never run out of things to learn
- accessible, there should be books or other media that help me ease into it
- you can work on it alone, but also share with people

Drawing is actually something I've been considering for a while.

I'm afraid that in some ways it's a bit too similar to music, but then again, I love playing music, so that shouldn't be a bad thing.

I would suggest giving it a try, as with music it takes a very long time to get decent at it. Hence the delayed gradification.

There are endless styles and creativity you can do with it, or you can try and copy other peoples. You never run out of things to learn and it is open ended.

Theres plenty of books and media on the subject not to mention instant feedback with artist communities.

You can work on it anywhere as long as you carry a pad&pen with you.

So yes it is quite similar to music in a way, both can be creative outlets and ways to express yourself. The only difference is you can practice drawing anywhere: a coffee shop, school, work, home, whilst watching something and pretty much anywhere else like the bus.

Hahahahahahahaha, nope

I'd also like to point out in response to the second half of your post that drawing/art is very similar to playing/composing music so some of the same prejudices should apply right?

Do you want to be good at something ? Or average in everything. If you love something and want something more maybe you miss something somewhere. Do you work ? Do you have a girlfriend ? Because if you play 3Hours of music everyday you don't have a lot of time to do something else. Or maybe you have a job that don't take much time (part time job ?).

And again. Stop with the stupid comment on anime. There's no pedo thing going on there. The legal age of the sex is lower in certain country which i believe japan to be 13. Now it's cultural so if you don't agree with it ok (i don't) but don't talk like that.

You should watch some anime and you'll tell me in how much of them you saw things that are borderline
