Hey all.
My wife and me have decided to go forward with the business plans for a shared workshop space I laid out in my last blog entry. At the same time, we're not going to rush the process and get in head over heels (especially with long-term financial commitments, such as buying or renting a big location). To start off, we're designing a home page to base our pre-launch marketing campaign around.
In order to expand the design beyond our own modest creativity, I ask you, dear TLers with assorted family and significant others, to design a simple, clean and nice logo for us! The winner receives my best Baneling cast, shipped free to anywhere in the world! Apart from a small number I gave or might give to friends and family, this is the only copy you will ever see anywhere! Furthermore, the top ten entries will be invited to a free day at our workshop (if and when it goes live), including a tutorial session with me.
Rules update:
One submission per account, but you're allowed to update/improve your submission if you want to, or if you have a better idea after submitting!
I reiterated again and again in my other blog entries that I'm not going to sell any works of mine, so use this unique chance to lay your greedy grubs on one of my sculptures, and give it your best shot!

Let me give you some details and rough parameters:
- The company is about renting out workshop space to professional and amateur artists The name is going to be "Kleine Kreise" ("Small Circles"). This holds several layers of meaning for us:
- By providing a shared workspace for amateur and professional artists and craftspeople, we want to create a local social network centered around the making of personal, beautiful and high quality items.
- "Beginners make large circles, masters make small circles" - and practice makes perfect!
- Reduce your ecological foot print by sharing things you don't use all the time, instead of owning them privately.
- The logo should be suitable (or adaptable) for a variety of marketing materials, so don't go crazy overboard with details.
- Submission format can be bitmap or vector graphics, vector graphics preferred. For submission purposes, a bitmap posted in this thread is sufficient ("delivery" of full graphics per mail after announcement of the winner).
- Submission deadline is Sunday, May 12th 2013, 23:59 pacific time.
- We're not pretending to be impartial. We'll choose what we like best and think will fit in best with our ideas.
- We are entitled to use the winning submission (or a design based on it) as our corporate logo, copyrighted to us (in case this ever becomes relevant). You will not receive royalties beyond the contest prize! All non-winning entries remain intellectual property of their respective creators.
- One submission per account, but you're allowed to update/improve your submission if you want to, or if you have a better idea after submitting (don't steal from others, though)! Your most recent submission (or update) until sunday night will be considered.

As you wished for in your post I kept it simple.
I was mainly inspired by the fact, that every artist starts of in smaller circles and advances by time to bigger and bigger circles of popularity.
I think that this logo would work in little proportions on top of a buisiness letter as well as in a bigger scale on ie. a window display.
I hope you enjoy this attempt and I would be open to feedback regarding changes.

^ clean and simple, but doesn't immediately ring a bell what the company is dealing with. Just my thoughts.
E.g. it can be art, it can be.. dartz/archery?

The smaller circles with individual letters represent individual artists. Together they form a larger circle (the local social network you mentioned). The large black and white K's in the center implies the interconnection and collaboration between individuals. (And the large black K kind of reminds me of a work table in that orientation :D)

Just Gimp. I don't have Illustrator, so unfortunately, none of this is vector.

I personally like btlVega's logo. If it needs to be super serious and classy, then perhaps jetburger's 2nd one.

Super serious and classy is not a strict requirement (although I personally tend to favor abstract designs over fanciful ones - my wife might disagree). Anyway, we would both be happiest to have a large pool of submissions to choose from, so please give us more! :-)

I am not a designer, and I suck at vector so you may need someone to do that if this is what you like.
I tried to incorporate your three core values that you mentioned, connected by a small circle to show it's unity.

Thanks for all submissions so far. We have had a look and a longer discussion, and if nothing new happens, I think we have settled on a preliminary favorite!

Thanks for this. I was going to ask if anyone knew of a free vector drawing program.
So I've been playing around with Inkscape and I came up with my latest and most likely final submission. I think I like it better than my other two. It's vector!

+ Show Spoiler +Design Concept: The thin-line four arcs imply large circles; they represent individual people, ideas, or methodologies. When they collaborate, they influence and refine each other to form a smaller circle. The words "kleine" and "kreise" share a "K" which is analogous to sharing of workspace and equipment to reduce the ecological footprint.
