For your viewing pleasure: the Baneling's first couple siblings.
So far, I made two molds. I wanted to write a summary/tutorial about the process, but struggled with translating some technical aspects, so I searched online and came up with this, in case you're interested.
My first mold had two main problems (casts in back row):
1.) I didn't put enough separating agent on the first half when pouring the second, so the two stuck together and I had to cut the mold open (second pic, back right).
2.) Partially due to the first problem (and partially due to my incompetence) I failed to make good vent holes for the feet, leading to air bubbles trapped at the tip of the feet and hence failed casts. I tried to cut vent holes but then had the problem that after the first cast the hardened plaster stuck in there, and it was a major pita to get out in preparation for the second cast.
My second mold is much better, but still the vent holes could have been better placed (had to cut some to make them function properly). The front row of casts is much improved and tends to have only minor air bubbles on the underside (but I'm improving on that front, oldest is left, newest is right). Besides, smallish air bubbles result in a somewhat organic pustule look for the Banelings underbelly which I kind of like. Okay, it would have been nicer to have modelled that and make a perfect mold, but hey, I'm still learning.
Now I only need to wait until the plaster has completely dried, then I'll do some finishing touches on the newer casts (remove seams, maybe fill in some bubbles). As you might notice in the first pic, the front row (still slightly damp) is in grays, where the back row is fairly white in the completely dry state. If anyone's into model painting, they might give them a good paint job.

P.S.: I was sick on and off for the last three weeks, but I'm getting better now and the weather's bound to get warmer within the next few weeks, so I hope to be back to chipping away on the immortal sooner rather than later.

The black leader baneling made me think of spider riders on LOTR: Battle for middle earth.
edit: My grandma always bought plaster figures to paint. If she was still alive, I'd love to see what colors she'd put on it. I'm sure it'd be hilarious.

I'm getting back into chess atm, and starcraft pieces would be a lot of fun .

Air bubbles. When you fill the casting material into the mold, you can trap some air inside there if you're not careful or if your mold is just badly designed. When you take the mold away, the finished cast has some missing material where the air was. Can look quite exotic.
