Listen to the DJ set that got DJ Shadow kicked off the stage at Mansion Miami:
All Basses Covered

There is a song lyric that goes: "Want to be in the rap race but ain't ran one lap." I feel that many believe they know how the music industry works. Having run many laps, false started a few times and only finished some races, I am here to tell you that what happened in Mansion Miami is exactly how the music industry works. It has happened to people I know on a smaller stage. It almost happened to me. The music industry is not fact and figures and graphs. It's a promoter for a large club, the paycheck that could change everything, and then the food chain takes its course. A venue's purpose is to showcase, promote, an artist but the way things currently work has major clubs stealing fan bases. All they have to accomplish is the booking of several popular non-mainstream acts and show them in a non-flattering way. The fans are displeased, vow never to see said live act again, and are immediately swooned by free bottles and VIP tables. Please listen to this music set by DJ Shadow, show him that we still support the good musicians

You would think an apology would fix everything, wrong, Shadow must've lost a lot of money for being targeted this way. This is why it is now wrong to assume that more fan base equals more skill. You never now when the flavor of the month nightclub will take you for all you are worth.

Reportedly, the promoter deemed the drum and bass that DJ Shadow dropped twenty minutes in "too futuristic" and brought the set to a halt.

Oh my word.

Surely if they booked DJ Shadow they know what he is like, and they also know that his fans will want to listen to HIS set, not some set that is approved by the club. Seems like there is more to it than him playing music that wasn't right.

Well, who becomes a promoter or hires one that doesn't know who DJ Shadow is, becomes the real question here. The set is exactly what I expected, a different interpretation of what a nightclub set should sound like. Its one of a kind, he delivered, but they did not want to take the risk which is what brings me to my next point. If a club hires you, they are liable for whatever style you choose to play. They had no right in pulling his music, especially for bar sales.

Np. I actually had a nightmare about this. It really is a great set and the best thing about it, which is true of many of the great's sets, is that it works in the club and at your home. Innovation.

Shows a lot about music industry, i saw once a top dj listing by some top mainstream site (forgot the name), it was a a tragedy. I loved drum and bass music, even dubstep and i saw both these genres crumble under mainstream pressure, now most of the artists produce garbage wooby stuff.

Said that i haven't listened to the set yet... but i can't imagine what wrong could dj shadow do, was it some sort of ventolin-esque track(aphex twin - ventolin)?

please dont call DJ's musicians. they aren't, unless they actually play an instrument and record all their tracks themselves instead of sampling other people's work.

I am a musician, I've been doing it profesionally since I left school over 10 years ago and never once has anyone ever tried to steal my fan base lol.... Plus if you get hired and they say "you have to play these songs" then you either turn down the contract or decide you would rather be paid.

Let me guess, rappers aren't musicians either?

This is kinda weird, I find most musicians (and artists in general) aren't so closed minded about other mediums.

I am a musician and a DJ and I can honestly tell you that DJs are musicians. It takes a lot of skill to keep people, like you even, entertained for hours at a time. They just dont play music, maybe if you listened to the set first you can expand your mind, because DJ Shadow does both things, on turntables mind you. DJs are musicians.

to the musician with a closed mind - DJ's are musicians. To see you say that in the first place shows that you aren't too knowledgeable in said facet of the industry. No worries.

on topic - Its really sad to see these noname promoters booking the big names because they bring the big crowds right? Yet you impose ridiculous standards of your own on them, skewed by the promoter's own view on things & how music should be catered & played (which really isn't his line of work).

Its like commissioning a famous sculptor known for his excellent bronze statues and then find yourself disappointed when he crafts bronze statues instead of a bulk of clay pigeons that you would expect, because clay pigeons are in at the moment.

Massive exposure to a culture that once was exclusive and a well-kept secret of few always attracts ignorant fellows only determined to make the maximum amount of profit
makes me sad, this ;_;

Ugh this is so sad. Shadow is such a talented artist. Too bad these retarded sheep have to listen to some brainwashed MTV shit in order to feel comfortable. They all need to take a heroic dose of magic mushrooms and open their fucking third eyes.

This, is all true. Made me very upset yet it inspired me. Playing different music is hard enough as it is, you literally have to find your own way, but promoters like these make it impossible. I know because most of my DJ friends struggled with things like these, in San Diego no less. The nightlife here is good but there's too much bad hip hop and top 40. People had to fight to bring Nu Disco, Disco, and even Tech house into the scene. Most of my fan base is from SoundCloud, because you need a fan base to get gigs and gigs to get a fan base as we all know. Some of the best musicians make THE best DJ sets, but no one would ever know that because they don't get to see them. It's a monopoly. Sadly, closed minded musicians, who dont know anything about dance music or very popular and specific types of dance music, love getting told what is good and what is bad.

In theory, actually, these different musicians dont stand a chance but these promoters reach into their little bags of tricks whenever they need the money thus killing off all the talent.

I don't know about most DJs, but DJ shadow is a real musician (and very good one at that). Go listen to his album "Entroducing..."

You have probably never listened to DJ Shadow before, so get your head out of your egotistical ass before you talk about something you have no idea about.

This has been fairly "big" topic on a half-nationwide radio here in Finland. Strange move by the club owner though, but then again if you have money, you can do what ever you please in your own club.

Hopefully Dj Shadow got paid though! :D

Seems like DJ shadow is again on first pages, things like that almost always end up in artist's favor.

I'd hope so because this is one of the dumbest things I've heard in a while.

Edit: the news that is, not the music! Listening to the set right now, pretty good so far, and it's not even necessarily my style.

This was obviously due to the fact that some rich kid with connections to the promoter didn't like the music, so the promoter shut it down.
