How to tell friend he's not responsible?

In college. Friend is really committed on getting a dog. However, TBH, he's really been mollycoddled growing up as a single child and he's definitely not ready for the responsibility IMO (he doesn't study that hard, he's trying to stay in school longer because he doesn't want to work, his room was always messy as hell). He's never had a dog and he's planning on getting a large herding breed like a cattle dog (which requires A LOT of exercise and care especially if living in a suburban area without wide open fields).

Now, the problem is that I still think he should have a chance at showing that he could be a good pet owner. Pets are typically given to children to teach responsibility, and I was wondering if anyone had anecdotal support for such things.

tell him to volunteer to train a service dog for a few months first. you get the dog, then have to train it and buy it food and stuff. so he gets only some of the cost but all the work of a dog and can give it back if it's too hard.

In college it's easy. You're always near home. I mean you can't leave home for more than like six hours if you have a dog home waiting to go out to pee. In college that's easy. As soon as you leave, find a job, it limits your freedom a lot.

Get a cat instead. A dog is not a single person's pet. It requires more attention than one person can afford to give. (Generally speaking. Obviously there are many exceptions.)

this is a good idea, that and you should probably have a sit down convo with him about it.

Hamsters.

Or he could volunteer to foster animals from a shelter.

I think the remedy to a coddled person is...to not coddle them. Just tell him about the responsibilities, then let him make his own decision. If it's a poor decision, he'll learn the hard way.

learning the hard way isnt really an acceptable answer when you're talking about an animal. Can't just decide you don't want it anymore.

A cat would be a better start. Certain dogs are okay, too, like the ones who don't need any special care. Maybe a dog, however, will change his perspective on things.

do it like this:

leave him a note on his desk that says:

"I don't think you should get a dawg, because you are spoiled and don't know what you are doing.

"How to tell friend he's not responsible?"

"X, I don't think you are responsible"

Seems so easy, doesn't it? That's because it is..

Just let him do whatever he wants.

I don't really see a problem in letting someone do something that requires responsibility even if that person doesn't seem to have any. What is the worst that can happen? He will just learn to be responsible, that's all. I don't think you should be worrying about someone else's decision because of what you think. And if you really want to tell him your opinion, just tell it to him directly and sincerely.

Well...no, the worst that could happen is that the dog ends up neglected. The worst case scenario isn't that he learns responsibility, the worst case scenario is that he doesn't.

It depends on how much your friend loves animals. Granted, I did start off raising hamsters, but I never had a large household pet until I got my cat. I think I'm pretty good with her, as I shovel her poop and and clean her dishes.

If he goes through with it, try to keep an eye out on that dog.

"You're not responsible enough for a dog, especially that kind of dog. It needs exercise, constant attention, etc. You don't have time or the inclination to treat it properly, and it's going to live a neglected and unhealthy, shitty dog life. It's like having a fucking kid, it's part of the family, it's a god damn pack animal. Could you handle having a 3 year old for the next 14 years? I don't think so. Go buy a rat that barks, and when you're too lazy to change the piss paper on your dorm room floor, give it to a family that has its shit together and thank me for telling you that you're a degenerate.

I don't think you should tell someone not to get a dog. Dogs can be really great for people. Also, being irresponsible with school work is not even close to the same thing as being irresponsible with a living being. I can be pretty irresponsible at times but I take damn good care of my dog and I love him.

Also, don't refer to your friend as a spoiled single child, even behind his back. That's pretty rude and judgmental.

I would tell him though to consider a smaller dog. That is sensible advice at least.
