My perspective on the growth of sc2 as an esport

If you look at the future of sc2 as an esport, one can only wonder what will happen. With LoL seemingly taking the throne, sc2 teams like ogs disbanding with the lack of sponsors, all this drama that happens with destiny and orb, and with the release of new games like diablo 3, the future of sc2 seems bleak to be perfectly honest. However, when everything is done and stabilized, i honestly believe sc2 will eventually come out on top.

That being said, few things need to happen. First of all, people in the sc2 scene need to grow up. No joke. The stuff involving destiny and orb had to be addressed, but the way that it did made the sc2 community look like shit to be honest. There's a time and place to cry to sponsors, but the way the community handled the destiny issue was terrible. Yes, i really do believe if this keeps happening, sponsors will pull from sc2 and invest in better, newer games.

In respect to league of legends, dota, or any moba games, i personally believe after 1 or 2 years, the hype will dye down and so will the moba esports scene. Now I'm not saying it will dye completely, obviously, but lets be frank, LoL jus is not that fun to watch. My friends who are hard core LoL players themselves even admit this. Sc2 as a game will never be dry so it will have contineuously have viewers.

As for me, I consider myself a diehardcore sc fan. I grew up playing bw, bought sc2 at release, and used to follow like every tournament out there. Truth is though nowadays, I have come to realize sc2 can no longer be my priority. I will start to be busy with work, school, and gotta squeeze in some time for d3 as well

TLDR; I just wanted to say, as a diehard sc2 fan, the only tournaments i will be following now are GSL, MLG, IPL, and Proleague due to time constraits. And i personally believe these will be what is left of the sc2 scene few years down the road. Hopefully, these leagues will grow even bigger and maybe we'll see it on Tv too

As much as i love sc2 as an esports for viewer base, it is true the growth has been stunted. Why? It's sorta the same thing over and over. Thus many probably got bored and moved on to something new (Dota , lol, etc). I must say though Sc2 is probably going to be the most professional and dedicated scene out there for sure, but the numbers overall will be lower. Talking worldwide numbers, it is probably going to be LOL>SC2>Dota2 but in terms of quality and such I think sc2>Dota2>lol

i agree a lot with you!

i think sc2's going to keep growing and lol will die down -- it won't die, but it will become much less popular after a couple more years

it's only big now cus lots of people are learning about this new sub-genre, so that people of all age groups are playing it

however, once this current generation nets their hours into such games, they'll grow bored of them soon enough

then, the only ones playing will be some of the current generation but mostly people of the newer/younger gen; the playerbase will shrink

that's how i see it, at least

unless OGN makes LoL really huge somehow in korea xD

How do you know the same thing won't happen to sc2?

I find SC2 to be more dry than LoL and I watch them both. I just think a team aspect is more enjoyable to watch and analyze. LoL is still really new and theres alot more innovation to come from characters build wise and playstyle wise while SC2 has became quickly "Standardized" and skil level is rising to a point where innovation doesn't bring results as easily (and innovation is fun to watch).

For LoL theres more than just individual skill and individual character strength there are different team comps, builds and playstyles and until HoTS comes that innovation wont be as apparent in the SC2 scene. I also personally find the battles to be dry unlike in BW where micro was more intense in fights.

These are all personal opinions and things that draw me as I do watch both games at competitive levels, the only thing that keeps drawing me in nowadays for SC2 is Foreigners vs Korean hype otherwise I still prefer to watch fighting games or LoL at this point.

and in response to Th1rdEye in LoL no game will be exactly the same in a bo3 or bo5 Team comps will change mistakes can change the flow of game and characters can be banned out if proved to be a huge nuisance determined by the teams so its relatively dynamic in nature, the only things that stay consistent are Lane roles (top lane mid lane bot lane jungle) and even than there are very viable ways to shake up the lanes from the normal AP mid Bruiser top Support AD bot jungle (ex. Talon middle [anti mage melee AD] Dual AP comps [AP in middle and top usually for AoE comps] Double jungle [2 junglers not the MOST viable thing but hasn't been experimented with in top level play] Kill lane bot [characters with hard CC and offensive summoners to gimp support carry combo]).

AGAIN ALL MY PERSONAL OPINION DONT TAKE IT LIKE IM SPEWING "FACTS"

I hope SC2 and LoL can both flourish together side by side though I have spent so much of my life watching SCBW and decent chunk of SC2 since its release and another large chunk watching LoL I dont want any of them to go away forever :<

it's just my prediction, but because, like i mentioned, people are only just finding out about the new popular subgenre

dota's been around a while but not many people have tried it

SC2 is still being played by many people even though RTS has been around for a long time

Dota has been around for a while, but rts has been around much longer, and you must be living in a basement to think not many people have tried dota.
IIRC lol alone has more players than sc2.

Plus the fact that new people who wanna play sc2 post-HotS has to buy both the original and the expansion (amounts to $100 dollars, Wol = $60, Hots estimated at $40) to play it, means it is not receptive to future growth as much as dota or lol which are free to play.
