TeamLiquid = NYC

I'm a small town guy. I live in a pleasant little suburb with a downtown by the river. There's farmer's market's on Thursdays, small art fairs, and I went to high-school with the barkeep at the local micro brewery. In a small town, you can be heard, and you can hear other people.

I feel like Team Liquid is the SC2 equivalent of New York City. There's nothing wrong with NYC. Millions of its citizens wouldn't have it any other way. There's the finest resources, and best minds available in a large city.

But like going to meijer, for me, there's just too much stuff to take in on team liquid. When I try and browse the strategy forums, it's... just too many voices! Don't get me wrong, I check this site every day. It's on my 'bookmarks bar' on firefox. I love the resources. It's just a little... impersonal from what I've seen. It's the same reason that playing games with your friends is leaps-and-bounds more fun that with total strangers.

I understand that it's an inescapable result from the exploding popularity of SC2 and the fine management of the site. So, I decided to write this blog. I'm not sure how much I'll write it in. But hopefully I can meet some personalities behind the strategies.

A little about me:

I'm 30, engaged, and a pharmacy student. I played SC1 casually, but didn't know what I was doing. I listen to day9 while riding around a riding lawnmower to pay for school. I play piano, mostly romantic era. I also write a little music, but mostly mess around with it. I'm a platinum player, recently up from gold. I like inventing my own strategies, but don't really play enough to ever super-optimize them. I also play minecraft on the uncovery server. It's a fine server!

Oh, and I like playing protoss. I avoid the colossus. I don't miss the khaydarin amulet... does the khaydarin amulet ever ask about me? Let's drive by khaydarian's house at night and beep our horn... :-P No, but seriously, I like feedback more.

Have a nice day,
-Sockso-

The larger a website is the less intimacy there will be. I think for a website our size there is more intimacy and small town feel than what should be expected and if you get into it a little bit more into it you will notice your own preferences and niches within those areas.

Overall though I agree but there's nothing we can do about being big! Except for banning more people which is what we try every day but you guys come back in tenfold every time.

We need to make micro sites like Team Gaseous.net and Team Plasma.net to have smaller amounts of teamliquidians and the people in THOSE sites will know each other but not the ones in the others. They can have big e-mexican standoffs in the SC2 strategy forum or something.

Then ban everyone taking part in that and go back to like 2-5k people teamliquid.net

Thanks for the input, Mr. Nazgul. I didn't mean this as an attack on team liquid! And I hope I didn't offend! Thanks for running the site, and keep up the good work. I'll try and get into the community a bit more. :-)

It's easy to get caught up in the swell of TL, as I'm sure it is in NYC, to just think you are a small cog in a giant machine. But there are lots of micro communities in TL, where you can "feel at home". I doubt this happens in the strategy sections, or LR threads, but certainly blogs, the occasional discussion thread and certain subforums are great examples.

Hey guys... you guys should come by channel NYC sometimes... There are players hanging out there from time to time including myself. From bronze to master players. Hopefully we can build up this channel for practice needs or just to chit chat! Looking forward to see ya all!

I think the strategy section is probably especially bloated with lots of voices and opinions. It is hard to get a good sense of things in there. I generally just listen to what the pros think, since they're the most likely to get things right.

However, as Nazgul mentioned, there are certainly niche areas of the forum where you can still find the more intimate feeling of a smaller site. Hopefully you will also find your own niche within the community.
