This is pretty cool, I love the stuff you're sharing.

Heyoka is a pretty cool dude - you'll probably know him from his Statistics-filled Broodwar write-ups or his excellent moderation skills. Dude, I'm afraid I haven't had the pleasure as often, but one of my earliest memories is that you offered to help out with Arena. Also doing Observer was pretty cool. This one's for you bro!

So what's been keeping me busy? Mainly trying out a couple of new weaves and finding some applications for them. So, four parts, let's get started!

1. PERSEPHONE FLOWER

One of the weaves I came across was called Persephone. It's basically a row of linked units, every unit being a box (4 rings weaved connected Boxchain) in which the 4 center rings are held by another ring in the center. I didn't think it was that pretty as a string, so I made a flower by chaining 6 units and joining the ends. Quite simple really, but the result looks pretty cool. Another neat little fact is that this weave (and its flower) has a left-handed and a right-handed variant. Rings used were 1.6mm over 6mm galvy (3,75 AR).

2. VIPERA BERUS AND VARIANTS

Vipera Berus is a European type weave, appearing mainly in chains as opposed to sheets. I'd made a piece before (and put it in my gallery) but, to my great dismay!, I noticed I'd made some mistakes. So I sat down and remade a good amount of chain.

Detail

From the mistakes in the old piece I got a couple of ideas though. In stead of alternating side rings one by one, I use some 3 step spiral stairs and some zig-zag sidepatterns. I'll try to to illustrate in the image below.

The right most chain is regular Vipera Berus. The side rings simply alternate left-right. The middle two chains I tried to variations of three steps. Looks okay but not as good the left most one which zigzags back and forth in steps of three.

They look pretty good but they don't bend too well. I'll probably submit these to the Maille Artisans' gigantic database. Possibly under "Vipera Berus variants", possibly under a new name. Vipera Twirlus? Maybe you guys can come up with something!

3. DRAGONSCALE

For some reason I never used to like weaves that involve different types of ringsizes. Like how a picture that's pretty of itself has more value to me than a picture that's pretty after photoshopping it, I used to kind of adhere to this "One ringsize to rule them all". I'm starting to make exceptions now though, particularly because of the mathematical preciseness that's involved with some weaves (whereas, in other, different ringsizes are still a desperate patch-up to save a failed endeavour - much like photoshop a contemporary front cover Madonna). An excellent starting point was Dragonscale. It's actually a weave consisting of two weaves that intermingle perfectly around and within one another. Imo it looks absolutely wicked.

Behold!

Holy shit it actually looks like scales.
So yeah did a couple of things with this weave. First off there's the mandatory bracelet:

Since the scales actually stand out to one side there's two ways of wearing it. Which makes it almost a 2-in-1-bracelet! Right? It's pretty sturdy and cool looking. Bit bulky though. Rings were 1.6mm over 10mm and 5mm galvy.

So what else? Turns out that if you roll a bit of sheet it becomes cone-like rather than tube shaped. This opened up the door to...

And making some from sparkly bright aluminium I now have a nice addition to my Xmas tree :3

4. MICROMAILLE

I've dressed some bottles in the past (basically you take a bottle, dress it with chainmail, and then put a candle or a flower or whatever in it for decoration), but I now laid my hand on a tiny sampler bottle. Time for some really thin wire, tiny rings and some hours of squinty eyed tinkering. The pics aren't the best.

The copper makes a patch of Dragonscale in the Euro 4-1

It's a Big ring/Small ring variant of Euro 4-1 with patches of copper bound Dragonscale mixed in, all suspended from the top by tiny spirals. The bigger rings are 5mm, the smaler ones 3.5mm. Not sure what I'm doing with it yet. Possibly put a candlet in it for the holiday season.

So...
What's next?
Been browsing through some weaves and found some nice looking ones. They go by the illustrious names of:
Trinity Round (and Captive Trinity Round).
Not Tao 3 Sheet.
Euro 4-1 Thrice.

So that's what's coming up I guess. Thanks for reading, tell heyoka I said hi if you see him

Holy crap, this is incredible! How long does it take you to make some of these? An estimated time for the pinecone, and estimated time per inch of those Vipera Berus chains might give a good idea.

This is some really nice stuff man. I think that this is probably one of the cooler hobbies I've heard of. I really like all the stuff you made, because it seems so unique and really awesome-looking.

edit: I just have to say that Dragonscale is my personal favorite. =)

Other than online shop, seriously consider a stall in a shopping center. I think there is still some time left before Christmas and it only takes 1 call to ask if you can. At least here but I don't it's any harder in Western Europe

That's the way my sister was selling gingerbread Christmas tree ornaments my mother and grandmother used to mass produce for few years until neighbour that was providing cake stopped cooperating for some reason.

Think about a nice package for the chainmail pinecones and people will buy them not only for their own trees but also as presents.
I think chain flowers and weaves like this

Seriously, I'd be up for buying some of those chainmail pinecone ornaments. Setting up a shop could be a pretty worthwhile endeavour.

Thanks Pholon! I agree, I am a pretty cool dude. These designs are awesome, as always .

My friend who was into maille always said that opening a shop felt silly, its a lot of work and doing stuff for commission felt like way too much work for what you were able to charge. Although he did sell a ton of keyring things he could whip up in 10 minutes.

also I remember that arena, it was just under a year ago. I helped test mic settings and banned people from the chat.

Pretty awesome. I heard that people who do this a lot lose their fingerprints due to wear, is that true?

Just to echo the online shop thing, you can easily sell some of this stuff on etsy. Just make a chainmail bikini (w/pictures) to draw people in and you're set.

For regular, simple weaves, I can get to 250 to 300 rings per hour. I actually made another Persephone flower this morning (49 rings) so I timed it. Took me 30 minutes for the first 48 rings and then another 8 mins to get the last one in (>_<). I think I can get a good 2 or 3 inches of VB in half an hour. The pinecones actually take quite long. They kind of fold in on themselves so at one point you literally have to go one ring at a time which ends up taking a lot of time.

I've done some of this in the past but due to budget cuts there isn't much going on locally at the moment (not even for Xmas! ). Pendants are made pretty easily but the aluminium cones take up to 1,5 hours to make since you have to be really careful not to scratch the material. So yeah making a mere 10 of them beforehand would cost me two days which, for the price I could sell it at, would probably not be worth it from a monetary point of view. There should be crea-fairs in summer again though which draw a lot of crowds etc. Will prolly go there if I have a chance.

I have some hardened skin on my hands from this (callouses?) but not on my fingertips (those are from playing guitar/bass lol). Thanks for the etsy tip, I'll check it out.

Also I'd watch Tron with heyoka
