SC2: pastime, hobby or obsession?

Like almost everyone here on TL.net I'm a gamer, which means that I've dedicated a lot of my spare time on games, and my love for Starcraft has led me to TL.net and be part of it's community. However, despite being a gamer, I still have a life to live, study and work. Which means that my time is not always dedicated to games, but sometimes it was, so from my experience I'm going to ask you if I'm obsessed, practicing my hobby or just passing time to get through the day.

Pastime: I think my days of pastime playing games was during the epic era of Nintendo/Sega games like Mario/Megaman. I remember that I preferred playing football/basketball in the yard with my friends over video games, but if there was nothing else to do, I would play video games. It was a healthy attachment to games; I wouldn't think about games when I'm not playing nor I would be able to recreate the stages in my mind. I would just care about those games when I was playing them.

Hobby: I think my only video game hobby was the "Winning Eleven 4 (or known as ISS Pro Evolution)" on PlayStation. I liked playing that game, I'd only play it to get better so I can beat my brother/friends at it. I would refine my custom team and get good players in it, I would often also visit friends or invite them over to just play against each other, and when I had the chance, I'd practice free kicks or search for undiscovered players to get into my team, I think at that time I prioritized this game over actually playing football.

Obsession: I admit that I was obsessed with World of Warcraft. Like many others, I'd revolve my life around World of Warcraft play. I'd change my sleep schedule to match the raids, I'd play something like 8-10 hours a day, I'd pass on any activity other than playing WoW. and in game, I had plenty of max level characters with the best gear, member of a top 20 guild in the world, had tons of in-game currency and achievements, and I could even name whatever you might think of in WoW. I was constantly thinking about WoW on how to improve or what I will be spending the day on later when I get back from university. Not to mention, I'd watch several videos and sometimes stay up late to watch a stream of a boss raid on beta servers that are not opened on EU servers. And when commitments force me not to play, I'd get annoyed and just try to endure the time (while thinking about WoW) until I can play again.

Now this is my first hand experience with how attachment to games can be, however, for Starcraft 2 I can't yet decide if I'm passing time, practicing a hobby or just plain obsessed with the game. I mean, I play often, but I don't spend time on Starcraft 2 unless I have nothing else to do (right now I'm visiting my family who live in a different country, so I have lots of free time but little friends here), but on the other hand I constantly check TL.net for Starcraft news, I watch LOTS of vods, I rarely miss a Day9 Daily or Artosis' interviews (Terran bashing HOOOOO!) and I constantly keep quoting SC2 units when messing around with friends who play SC2 as well ("I RETURN TO SERVE.").
I usually watch VODs and streams more than playing myself, and I usually just try to convince myself that "It's like watching Football", however, watching SC2 is not my only thing related to the game, and I'm not sure I can really separate watching SC2 VODs and streams from actually playing it.

So what do you think? What is my relationship to SC2?

Hobby. Since you visit this site and admit following casters and known personalities, watching VODs and trying to get better, it's more of a hobby than a simple pastime.
It would be a pastime if you only play for fun when you have free time and didn't care about your rank/division and how you play.

To me it's also a hobby. I'm a little too old for it to be an obsession for me like BW was. I don't have that amount of spare time anymore. Besides that, I play SC2 to hold out until Diablo 3 will be released.

For me, gaming is really a part of my life.

I'm a college student, and I make decent grades. I'm a business owner, and I make decent money. I'm an athlete, and I'm in decent shape.

But above all else, I'm a gamer, and I'm damn good at it. ; )

That's funny that you thought of it as watching football because I've thought that same thing.

I'm basically the same as you - I watch and read more about the game than I actually play it these days (for me it's that I don't know anyone who will play with me, and laddering got boring once I switched to zerg and couldn't keep up).

I would say for you it's a hobby. If sc2 disappeared you'd be fine, albeit a little bored until you found some other interest to occupy your free time.

Definitely a hobby. I'd say this because you are kind of involved in stuff related to the game, besides the actual game itself. Also, you are prioritizing important things first, and doing this sc-related stuff in your free time. It'd be more of an obsession if you play the game itself non-stop and prioritizing it over everything else, which you obviously aren't doing.

For now, SC2 remains a hobby for me. I just go on to play with RL friends and old teammates. I hope it will develop and become an obsession for me just like BW has, but I feel somethings missing in SC2 that prevents it for becoming an obsession for me.
