I know there's quite a few laptop threads out there but most of them are for cheap laptops and none are that recent.

I want to buy a rather top notch laptop in the $1500-$1900 dollar range but I don't know where I should get it. Obviously the easiest way would be to go to the local Best Buy and buy something like
this.

I don't know a lot about buying laptops so if you could tell me if this is a good idea or if I should buy from somewhere else (online maybe?) and what brands are best. Also, I would like it to run SC2 on ultra if that's possible.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Newegg

pretty much has everything and have great deals

tigerdirect is another one I heard about

1500-1900 dollar laptops will pretty much run SC2 on Ultra
Unless you buy something ridiculously overpriced

what do you want out of your laptop?
so far we have "good gaming ability", and your price range. what else? (ideas: screen size, weight/size, design, build quality, etc)
edit: usually buying in-store isn't the greatest of ideas if you're worried about $$. ideally you'd figure out your ideal laptop then find it for cheap online (i.e. either from official site with coupons/promotions or on sites like newegg). the value in going to a store is getting to feel/play with the laptop which is pretty important

edit2: also, there's little value in judging laptops as a brand. not all sagers, dell's etc are created equal. it really comes down on an individual laptop basis
(\o/)  If you want it, you find a way. Otherwise you find excuses. No exceptions.

Please do yourself a favor and buy yourself a good desktop and a cheap laptop instead. High end laptops are rarely worth the effort, they have terrible battery life and are on the heavy side, so they aren't very useful for portable computing, yet they cost more than desktops so you get worse performance for the price.

Don't care too much for screen size or weight or size really (nothing ridiculously big). I just want a good quality fast laptop good for just about anything.

Size is a preference, weight isn't too much of an issue to me i'm not a weakling, but i find anything over ~14" is cumbersome to lug around every day, if i only have to lug it around once and awhile i'd do 17" be more of a desktop replacement then a laptop though.

Something you have to seriously consider.

Also do you actually live in canada?

http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np8690-built-clevo-w860cu-custom-gaming-laptop-p-2659.html?wconfigure=yes

cuz if not i'd just do this
  • 15.6” FHD 16 LED Backlit Wide screen (1920x1080) Super Clear Glare Type Screen
  • Intel® Core™ i7-720QM, 1.60-2.80GHz, (45nm, 6MB L3 cache)
  • IC Diamond Thermal Compound - CPU + GPU (AS5 is shitty old style thermal compound)
  • ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD5870 1024MB PCI-Express GDDR5 DX11
  • 4,096MB DDR3 1333MHz Dual Channel Memory (2 SODIMMS)
  • 80GB Intel X25-M Solid State Drive (SSD2 Serial-ATA II) (always can get an external)
  • Intel® Ultimate-N 6300 - 802.11A/B/G/N Wireless LAN Module
  • Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit Installed (64&32-Bit CD Included) w/ Drivers & Utilities CD's

$1797.45
I think xoticpc does do canada shipping but i'm sure the price would be different.

I have that laptop and I bought it from NCIX. I think it's little different like the RAM and the HD space.I would go for the NCIX one which comes with a bag and a mouse

Hmm... I'm not sure how much I'll be moving it actually. I'm taking comp sci at waterloo starting september. I'll probably have to bring it there frequently right? I also own a small netbook but it's not good for anything demanding.

Edit: Oh and yes, I do live in Canada (Kitchener, Ontario to be more precise).

I've been researching a lot lately and I think I'm aware of all the best gaming laptops right now, but I really don't know what you're looking for. :|

So you're taking it to class for comp sci. What games are you going to be playing? Need battery life? What is ridiculously big? I assume the 18" Toshibas are out, but what about 17" laptops?

Okay, I was a bit undecided about what I want, but I think I made up my mind. Gaming isn't a priority (I just wanna play sc2 on reasonably good settings). I don't want a massive ass one probably 15-16 inch screen would be good and I want a battery life thats longer than 2 hours.

My main question though is if buying a laptop in Best Buy/Futureshop is a bad idea? Are they actually that overpriced there?
