Hey guys I've been doing a bunch of research looking at laptops around 400$ for my mom. I haven't found anything that really stands out as an amazing deal yet. I was hoping I could find something with a pretty decent processor (i5 2430 or something in that category) but those seem to be just out of the price range I'm looking at.
It doesn't need to be able to play any games, just surf the web and stream video. Preferrably looking at websites ncix or newegg.ca but willing to look at futureshop if they actually have a decent deal.
Also, if it's possible over 2 hours of battery life would be a plus. My i7 3610 gtx670 laptop has a 4-5 hour battery life so it can't be that big a stretch.

Uh, you dont need an i5 processor to stream video and surf the web, I'd suggest looking at chromebooks or netbooks if she is a true "casual" user that doesn't need powerful anything

Laptop not netbook, thanks. Netbooks are not what I'm looking for. This is a work/casual pc replacement computer.

If your willing to wait a few months, i3 mobile Ivy Bridges will be out.

she doesnt need an i5. hell she doesnt even need an i3 for casual use. Look around on craigslist. Im sure you can find something that is much cheaper than that laptop that will work just as well for her.

Yeah core2 duo or pentium dual core is sufficient. You can fetch one for 300. Then thrown in a comfortable mouse, extended battery, laptop bag, etc and you'll have a great experience.

Just please if you are buying a computer under $500 think twice about getting an acer , there lower end computers can be a disastor, mostly failed hard drives and ports falling into the computer are the issues.
I personally love Asus laptops so I think that one link sounds like a great idea
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834230374 Heres an Asus around 350$ if you want to get a bit cheaper
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834230242 Although this one is a bit more in price the physical computer looks and feels like you payed a lot for it compared to the other one which feels a lot more like cheap plastic.
From all the computers in that price range these are the only two that i can recommend without feeling like its a death trap.
