If it works like it does down here, my understanding is they treat the bonus paycheck as if it were your normal biweekly paycheck. a.k.a. you make 6 digits and should be taxed at that rate. It just means since your biweekly checks are not that big they should owe you a refund.

interesting, you mean gov owes me refund? does that balance out when i do my taxes at the end of the year i.e. i made (salary + bonus) and you taxed me (salary tax + too much bonus tax) so give me the difference back? if i was taxed at the rate i usually am instead of this ridiculous rate it would make a big difference on the order of a nice new desktop. I wonder if there are methods to get a refund earlier but doubt it. worth looking into tho!

I believe the answer is yes, but I don't know anything about Canadian taxes/tax law. It may very well be worth the money to hire someone to do your taxes for you to catch things like this(pretty much every single person I associate with that is even mildly 'well off' pays someone or has a friend/family member do their taxes for them, because of stuff like this).

IIRC they're always trying to take out the correct amount so that at the end of the year you owe $0 (never happens). When you get a big check like that they try to annualize it so that they take out the appropriate amount as if that is what you will make every pay period for the year. However, you don't make that much every pay period so when it's all added up at the end of the year you overpaid for this check while in theory paying the correct amount for all your other checks so they'd owe you whatever difference between what you actually made during the year and what they projected you'd make and owe every pay period. Although if you were somehow underpaying each month based on how your payroll is set up etc. it could end up a wash or only diminish what you owe at the end of the year.

I could be a little off but that's how it was explained to me.

Owing money at tax time is actually the ideal situation.

When the government takes out taxes from your check, it's essentially you giving an interest free loan to the government. The amount you owe in taxes *mostly* only matters when taxes are due each year. Now, the people who get a massive tax return are just getting their money back with no compensation for having their money "borrowed" by the government. Money now is always worth more than money later, so the people who held onto their tax money as long as possible before giving it up to taxes are the ones who get the most bang for their buck.

However, despite knowing this, getting that fat check in the spring feels soooooooooo good.

I'm well aware it's better to owe (within the limits without a fine), I'm just telling Coma he's going to get some of that tax from his bonus check back is all

Transitioning between projects is mad awkward. My current project in my company is obviously ramping down and losing funding, so I find a new project and team to work on (haven't started yet, but they've accepted me). Just now the old project lead calls me up and wants me to stay with the stinking ship. That conversation was rather uncomfortable.

I should mention he doesn't have any control over my move, but he is kind of senior.

The problem with owing money is that if you owe too much money it screws up your financial planning. I guess it's not too big of a deal for you guys but if I did that I could screw myself over pretty bad. Much prefer playing it safe IMO.

How do I best man at a wedding? I've never even been to one.

It's a big honour. Formerly this role was someone who did things like protect the bride from being kidnapped or whatever but I assume that your social life is far less exciting and won't involve the need to do any of that stuff. In which case a lot of your role will be to help maintain order and flow at the wedding. You're a pretty important person so you still have important stuff to do. You know, things like:
  • Keep the Groom from having panic attacks (he will probably have at least one);
  • Make sure the in-laws are comfortable (especially if they're paying the bill);
  • Tell the ushers what to do (cause the DJ got us falling in love again);
  • Read that Best Man Speech (but don't do anything cliche or cringe worthy);
  • Keep guests honest (they shouldn't be trying to make this day about them because it's all about the special couple);
  • Know the schedule and try to keep things rolling (haha good luck);
  • Make sure the rings are safe so put them in your inner jacket pocket in an envelope or something and never take off your jacket (because if they go missing...);
  • Keep snacks, fruit or candy on you for the Bride/Groom to eat because they'll be busy greeting people and stuff and will be unlikely to actually eat anything most of the day (this is not an official duty but will be really appreciated); and
  • Be there when your friend breaks down in tears because he's super emotional (keep spare handkerchiefs and pocket tissues with you at all times).

Well most people working a standard salary/wage job never find themselves in that situation to begin with, it mostly applies to people who are self employed or have an income stream that they have to declare taxes on themselves because it's not automatically deducted.

My brother is on track to get married soon-ish(as in, he's talked to me about his plans to pop the question), and his girlfriend's potential bridesmaids are basically all mid 20's and gorgeous; everything is in place for good times to be had, she just needs to say yes.

I actually do budget but my income is such that if I make that kind of a mistake on my tax return there could be consequences because I do not earn enough to have much in the way of savings. I live month to month. Budgeting has been helpful in controlling my spending but it doesn't create cash out of nowhere.

Yeah, I do a ton of seasonal work and so my income stream unstable all by itself. While I could play around with claiming more exemptions when I start a job it makes me a little nervous considering that every time I look at the form I can't figure out what I could be claiming that I'm not.

Well that's good but a tough situation. Large lump sums to pay are the bane of any budget in that situation. You just gotta start putting away small chunks into an emergency fund for when those things unexpectedly come up. It's not easy

Yeah, it's not doom and gloom though because in my field I can still go for a masters which I *should* be able to get complete funding for. I really enjoy the work I do it's just that in the meantime the pay is bad.

Like, it's annoying that my college degree isn't enough for what I want to do, but my situation is still SO much better than the people I've worked with at retail jobs who were never able to aspire to college at all.

That midrange rogue deck you found seems pretty weak, lost 8 out of 9 games so far. Granted, they were against warriors for 4 of them and when all had 3+ late game legendaries (Sylvanas, Cairne, Ragnaros) to throw my way in a match-up that doesn't seem favourable to begin with didn't help.
What I find more curious is that I haven't played a single Hunter so far. Sure it's not 15 games, but considering the previous days more than half the games were against them, the odds are pretty low.
Edit: played against a Hunter on the 10th game. I'm still surprised it took so many to see one.

Actually, how the heck did that guy go legend with that deck? Either Ragnaros carries him stupidly hard (and another case of winning through legendary but it's been said to me over and over that it's false), or he's just lucky with his draw. That deck doesn't do jack shit with "passive" minions like taz'dingo and sludge belcher as soon as it doesn't fight aggro, it loses to warriors who roam the ladder and to shit like handlocks, and with a bad draw it's plain useless and waiting to die to anything (I've had several of the 9 games where despite going 2nd and mulliganing I had no card to play till turn 3 (subtoptimal) or even 4).
Cant take LMS hipsters serious.
