He saw the nexus and the count of phoenixes gives away Oz was at 2 stargate. At that point, Grubby knows no attack is coming from the ground letting him spend extra money on those cannons/hts.

In addition, you can get archons early and cheaper than morphing dts (as PvP is slowly going towards archon immortal compositions).
