Any round-robin group with the potential for a tie between an odd number of players can theoretically go on indefinitely. In case of an even number of tied players, you could play a bracket-tiebreaker. There have been 3-way ties in U&D groups before that took a lot of time. The problem is with the round-robin format, not so much with the groupsize.

there was an MSL (or maybe OSL) 3 way tie that went on for quite a few hours
