I think a lot of the reason it was so effective was because Squirtle's timings for a while were unique and most of them weren't really well documented or known.
Now with Squirtle being as high profile as he is, players know what to look for and the timings lose a lot of their power because players are better prepared for them.
Still, having them in your back pocket is always a nice back up plan to mix in a series. One of the reasons MVP is so good is because he has such a wide variety of builds, it's almost impossible to prepare for everything.
If you play the same style all of the time, it makes you predictable and much easier to prepare for. (Naniwa for example.)
