Probably a decent amount more than 5 mil. But the fact they can grow the prize pool with minimal investment is amazing and brilliant.

? theres no way it costs more than 5 million jeez. Even factoring increased infrastructure for the influx of players etc...
If ESL can do something similar-ish then the actual event costs can't be over $1M. Yes yes TI involves more including a private copy of the dota network hooked up to dotaTV etc but still. TI can't cost more than $3M total to run including prize pool. I'm fairly certain they made a profit last year.

You realize Valve pays for everything for the teams? And they don't do their own production, they pay for a high end production crew to do it all.

PS i'm not counting the cost of the stadium since thats clearly covered by attendance tickets (and then some).
If u wanna factor that in then u gotta factor in the ~1.5M they get from attendance tickets this year. (12K tickets X100+$ per ticket)

Renting out arena for four days fully staffed. 16 teams flight and high quality hotel. All of the rented production equipment and staff with it. Casters and other members flight + hotel. All of the time spent developing all of the tools and software behind TI and compendium.
Shit adds up, wages probably being the most expensive thing
And 1.6 million prizepool

You said "it can't cost more than 3m including the prize pool". That's 1.4m for the whole event. I think that's less than a third of the whole event.
I think they're making a profit this year. But the last couple, certainly not.

That venue likely costs a mint. It's not the most costly(which is likely wages, like everything else), but it costs a ton.

Apparently KeyArena is more "nice we got an arena" than "we got a nice arena" of course I'm sure their options were kinda limited.

indirect ROI is massive, just like most blizzcon events. It doesnt matter what it costs or if you even make profit.

Of course, otherwise the first 3 internationals would never have occurred.
I mean there are definitely indirect costs too (lol poor support get 90 billion tickets "If I purchase the compendium now, do I get all the previous rewards?" etc etc).

Yeah, TI is amazing advertisement for dota. Without TI3 the launch of dota2 wouldn't have been anywhere near as successful as it was.
