Hi!
This may seem like a noob question, but I wonder, what's the point of quickly selecting your workers multiple times in the beginning of the match? This is not about initial worker split or larvae trick, but rectangle-selecting workers, selecting main building, then clicking many times to set a rally point, then repeat. I always thought it was totally stupid and pointless, because clicking over 9000 times to set a single rally point doesn't seem to make your workers move faster or anything. Until I saw progamers doing it.

It's not pointless, its warm up for the later game where you actually need to be fast like that. No point in just staring at your screen, rather you should use the time to get the blood pumping and get ready to do some really quick mouse/keyboard usage. You can make it fun as well by setting up small mini games for yourself, try selecting all the probes/minerals as fast as possible and it'll improve your overall mouse skills as well.

But nah it has no "direct" positive effects to it, your probes wont mine faster or anything of that sort.

the reason with hight level player do that is for warm you hand. When you do that, your reaction time is better and you will not put your self behind just because your not paying attention to your match and forget to make a pylon or the gas in time i.e

Look at the Professional Gamers, they don't really do much besides selective unit controlling and etc. It's a warm-up exercise that is useless unless you have high APM. If you have low APM nothing will change lol.

I'm almost positive you're wrong, however it is faster if you send them to mineral patches that have shorter paths back to the nexus/cc/hatch.

If you look at some FPVODs with Jangbi, you see that he selects his probes after they collect to mine minerals. There has been some speculation about this mining a little faster but since other pros are not doing this, it's probably not true.

IIRC, they call it "petting" the workers, and yes it does make them mine slightly faster, ive seen soooo many pros do this in vods

just sets the pace for your hand muscles to keep that pace later in the game rather than trying to force yourself to get progressively faster and faster.. plus after doing it for awhile it just becomes habit anyway and its hard to break

I'm not 100% sure, but for terran you can actually improve mining efficiency by controlling your workers early on.

If they are mining from a close mineral patch, but there's a further one behind it so the patch looks like

------M(1)
M(2)---------------CC
------M(3)

Then click on M2 after your scv has dropped off minerals, and when it reaches M1 tell it to actually mine M1. This prevents scv deceleration that it would do on its own. You can also do this with M3. This will save you maybe 1/4 of a second each time, but it doesn't hurt in the super early game. I'm surprised I don't see any pros ever do this.

Edit: how come spaces don't show up for me?

Here's another noob question related to the OP, what exactly is the key sequence they are using to warm up? Are they selecting the workers, then selecting the nexus/cc/hatch with the mouse, or do they use the building hotkey? Or is it different with every player? I know it's such a minor thing but I've never actually done it myself.

I have my own mini game I use at the first couple minutes of the game, it involves choosing random workers or minerals and trying to click them all accurately as fast as I can in the order I want. This is to help my one big weakness in battles, microing individual units fast enough.

To get MY apm up, I hotkey a group of probes to 9 and my nexus to 0, I then spam
90909090909090909090909090
and I get high amounts of APM in a matter of seconds, its great. Do that instead of clicking and spamming rally points.

as far as I knew this was the only little thing you can do early on to improve mining efficiency. small, but no point in not doing it early on if you're warming up your hands anyway
