Ultimate-guitar.com is helpful

search for lessons on youtube

there is a guide on tl about how to play that should help you start

Taking lessons is one of the most important things you can do

Have you had any sort of music training before? Like playing the piano or violin? In other words, before you learn how to play a guitar, you should learn about music, notes, rhythm, and other stuff. Especially rhythm man... there are too many people on youtube with no rhythm at all and it's just offensive.

I learned chords first which led to easy songs. Then some theory like name of notes on the string/frets, tones, semitones. Learned harder songs. Went to barre chords. Learn more songs. Strumming pattern. Then theory like scales, major and minor. And that's where I'm at now. Mostly self taught via internet stuff.

It will certainly speed up progress in the beginning, but there's plenty of free resources available online for those who can't pay for a good teacher.

Youtube videos are incredibly helpful and inspiring. I would recommend visiting my youtube page and checking out my favourites/subscriptions for acoustic videos. I am a visual learner so seeing the different fingerings and patterns musicians use is a huge asset.

http://www.youtube.com/user/TotallyGuitars is probably a good place to begin since you're a complete beginner.

The best guitar DVD I've seen is Tommy Emmanuels 'Up Close,' although I haven't really watched a lot of instructional dvds tbh. He has some great info and advice, especially for those who are looking to play finger style. Finger style usually involves playing with a thumb pick (although it's not necessary) and playing the bass line and the rhythm/melody at the same time. I've been playing on and off for about 4 years, but in the last 3 months or so I've been totally consumed with learning this style, and I've never had so much fun playing. I would recommend the 'Windy and Warm' lesson from TotallyGuitars for those who want to give a shot at finger style.

Of course, in the end it all comes down to the amount of time you spend with your instrument. It takes time to get good so don't be discouraged if the results aren't instant.

I put this in another guitar blog a few days ago, and it seems relevant here as well. I assume you are playing electric guitar from your post though? Either way, there's tons of great material that can be found on youtube for acoustic and electric players.

I would definitely check out the guitar guide someone posted in here to start learning some basic music theory and chords.

it may be boring at the start, but you really should learn proper music theory at the beginning, it will really help if you want to learn more theory-intense music like jazz.

LEARN LEARN LEARN the notes on the fretboard, at least learn the first 12 frets as the next 12 are a copy of the first 12. This will help you to form chords quickly and stay in key when you are soloing over chords. Relating to key, you should learn at least the major scales first, as all modes are based on the major scale and even the minor scales have relative majors.

When you are learning chords, learn how to create chords and intervallic relationships. This will most likely go hand in hand with more melodic lessons like scales, as they require knowledge of intervals too.

ALSO dont be a noob, learn notation as well as tab. learning notation makes it SOOO much easier to see what chords are being played if you dont have a superb ear.

Some other people will probably be able to help you with the technical side of things like posture and picking techniques, but alot of it is common sense ie. dont play in painful positions, warm up before you play etc.

I know you said you didnt want to be a 'rockstar' or anything, but learn this stuff anyhow. you may find it interesting, and its good to get into this stuff now so you dont have to learn it later when its more difficult

I was like you and started from scratch by watching youtube videos. Justin Sandercoe has a bunch of guitar lessons starting from the most basic open chords to more advanced stuff. He has both technical lessons as well as song lessons you should check out. His webiste is www.justinguitar.com

This is the song I'm currently working on:

I think you need to decide what you want first. From what i've read, it seems that you're into electric guitar, not so much fingerstyle.

In my opinion, getting lessons is important to correct your technique, which will obviously be wrong in the beginning. I think that is something that isn't easily learnt by watching videos since you usually don't know where you are going wrong.

I'm more of a classical /fingerstyle, not really into electrical rock stuff, but i'm sure the same applies to using picks.
Please send me a PM of any song you like that I most probably never heard of! I am looking for people to chat about writing and producing music | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=noD-bsOcxuU |
