its fun, it makes you more happy and sociable.
You won't understand until you try it. No need to get shitfaced or lose control or anything. I've never done anything drunk i've regretted afterwards and it can be fun.
Saying you don't see the appeal of drugs is like saying you don't see the appeal of traveling or something. Why go to the beach or another country and hang out when you can hang out in your room? Because its fun and different and you get to experience something novel. If you've never used any mind-altering substance you honestly have no idea. I encourage you to give it a shot in a good safe environment.

in america we're forced to drink in secret as teenagers so it creates a kind of subculture where people just go way overboard with it because it's taboo and there's only a limited time that they can do it. This isn't the only factor. I was allowed to drink at the age of 14 and I genuinely enjoy being drunk, so for a long time i went pretty hard. Now I don't feel like it as much just because I need to feel at least a little productive everyday lol.

Please dude. Most alcohol that actually taste good taste the same as cola or other soft drinks. That is unless you drink fine liquor, which is hardly suited for getting wasted every weekend.

Alcohol does taste like shit. I don't care what beer you're drinking. Soda at least makes it tolerable.

I tried to get drunk by drinking many glasses of Captain and some Appletiser the other night, and it just didn't work. I don't drink at all anymore and the novelty of getting drunk wore off after I got too pissed at a music festival this year and barfed.
Drinking is a habit followed by so many, yet it occurs to me that many drinkers don't really like being drunk. So rather don't even try getting drunk.

This is one of the worst analogies I've ever seen.

Well what do you drink then? Whenever i want to get hammered it is either beer, boxwine or some kind of cheap hard liquor.

I think he's just saying that some beer tastes good

Try Amarula with coffee. That cream liqueur is very tasteful.

I think the reason people plan on getting wasted is because they're hoping to recreate an amazing experience they had one time when they were super drunk.
So when a friend of mine says, "Hey wanna get loaded on friday?", my mind jogs back to these awesome memories and I instantly jump on board.
Although, I find the best memories are made not when you plan on getting drunk, but just when it kind of happens without you realizing it.

I find alcohol incredibly stupid since I get hungover after two beers and a pint is over $7 where I live.
It can be fun if you're around cool people, but I find I have just as much fun whether I'm drinking or not.

Jello shots. The gentleman's choice.

Everyone is more enjoyable when you're drunk.
You love your friends more than you normally do. You find annoying people less annoying than you normally do. You find awkward people less awkward than they normally are - and that's because they genuinely are less awkward.
I've tried being sober at parties and unless it's just close friends, I just can't stomach it. If I'm sober I would much rather be having an activity to go along with it, ie: sports, board games (though those are usually fun with drinks, too), exercise, sports, exercise, etc.
And then after sweaty sober sports, you get drunk and it's even better.
Yay booze.
edit - getting shitfaced to the point of blacking out is not cool. It's dangerous, not good for you, and more than that: there's just nothing necessary about it. My friends and I used to go out with the intention of getting black-out destroyed, and I don't know why it took us so many years to realize how juvenile, pointless, and unhealthy it is.
Drinking is fine. Getting very drunk is fine. Blacking out or missing out on responsibilities is pathetic.

people just need to learn to drink like adults

Thanks a lot for the responses. Like I said in the first post, I totally understand the draw to having a few drinks with your friends or at a party, that makes sense to me. However as I'm typing this a friend of mine down the hall is power houring with some of his buddies, just drinking as much cheap lite beer as they can. It's also worth noting that it is finals week right now, I know as a fact several of them have exams tomorrow. This mentality confuses me so much. Drinking seems reasonable, but drinking with the sole intention of getting drunk for no other reason than to be drunk doesn't make any sense to me. Are they just idiots or is there something more to it?
EDIT: He just walked into my room and said they're playing a game to see who will throw up first. I think he's just an idiot.

well i'm pretty sure drinking is always done with the intention of getting drunk...otherwise you would just have hot chocolate which tastes better. Still your buddies just sound like idiots with nothing to do.
