What do you guys think about a few SC2 players who stream on teamliquid.net receiving donations from the viewers? Do you think they deserve it? What qualifies gamers to receive donations or lesson fees from their viewers? Please respond courteously.
Update: Ok, so far, you guys are basically saying that as long as the gamer plays with acknowledgeable skill and/or casts with awesome entertainment and doesn't keep annoying the viewers to donate, then it's okay for the gamer to put a donation link on their channel; also, no one is forced to donate to the gamer. But when a gamer puts a donation link on one's own streaming channel, is it fair for the viewers if the gamer keeps having his donation link on his channel for an indefinite amount of time, i.e. for years if he keeps streaming with awesome quality and doesn't bug the viewers to keep donating? Should the gamer explicitly state for what legitimate reasons the gamer is receiving donations from the viewers? Again, please respond courteously.
Update 2: Thanks guys for having interesting discussions so far. Is it wrong for a great gaming streamer to stream for one's own profit? Is it wrong for the streamer to profit from donations but right from lesson fees? Are lesson fees better than donations in explaining why a great streamer can stream for one's own profit because giving lessons is more of an active service to the viewers than just streaming games? Is it okay for the streamer to stream for one's own profit from donations and/or lesson fees?

I don't care
If people wanna pay them good for them

I personally think it's a little silly to be giving ppl money for these things and I will never pay for lessons or donate to streaming. But your money is your money and if you want to give it to others then go ahead and be my guest.
But if you're offering crap lessons at superinflated price and crap streaming ... you get all my hate and public calling out-ness. Also if you constantly ask for donations ... that's just plain annoying.

I am against it cause I think it is stupid. its like that rich kid who gave lots of money(probably his dad's) to have iNcontrol travel to Dubai and coach him.

I don't think there's anything wrong with donations. None of the popular streamers (Trump/Debo/etc) sit there and spam "hey guys donate plzz!!" "hey guys remember my donation link is" "oh hey guys my paypal is here!". (^Agreed that its annoying as hell!).
Other then that its 100% personal choice. No ones forcing anyone to donate and while some feel its silly, others pay because they want to regardless (may it be for educational purposes, to support the content, or simply because it gives them enjoyment. I can say myself I'm not a fan of Trump but I've spent hours watching Debo because he is amusing/entertaining to the max. What people do with their money is their choice.

I don't watch their streams so I don't know, but do they actively ask for donations just for providing a stream? Because that is just ridiculous, and they should not be getting donations for something like that.

That I would consider abusing TL, asking all the time for donations it is.

I get the feeling that it'd be a lot more kosher if viewers knew that the donations were going to the expenses some streamer claim (like better camera/recording app/mic etc) ... instead of simply being profit.
Also it irks me that donators can be possibly overpaying/overdonating. For example, sometimes a streamer (or any TLer asking for money) will say they need a new mic. Well that mic costs maybe $100. So a whole bunch of donations come in and this guy gets $500. Well you know what ... he just got $400 profit and no one besides him knows that. That's just BS to me.

no one is forcing you to donate...
|
If they just add a 'Donate - Paypal' button to their ustream page or something, who cares.
If they plug it all the time, I would go elsewhere myself.
If they charge for the service of streaming, I would go elsewhere myself.

Why does someone have to "deserve" a donation? It's the donator's money and they can do whatever the fuck they want with it.

No streamer should ever say hey guys give me donations for a new mic unless the people watching are seriously bitching about quality. In regards to what you say, I know Steven.Bonnell has a donation function on his main website for his stream where he posts he replays and stuff, on that page it LISTS who donated what and what amount was donated.

anyone else immediately thought of BigT after reading this part?

Rebirth: Yeah, all I'm saying is the majority of ppl (and this even goes beyond TLers/streamers and into any type of person online asking for donations) ... do not tell their viewers/audience when to stop donating. It's fine and dandy that a streamer really does need a new mic, and that he is a great streamer, and that he has a loyal following who are willing to give him donations. But for gods sake don't abuse the power. Ask for donations, say how much you need, and when that need is met, tell everyone so they can stop wasting their money filling your pockets.

Yes, seriously... who cares what people do with their own money?

Because I'd like to warn ppl against possibly throwing away their money?
I am willing bet that most ppl who donate don't think about the possibility that when you combine all the donations given to a streamer who asks for say a new mic that costs $100, the total collected will probably be closer to $300. And when have you ever heard a streamer (or whoever) tell his viewers that they overdonated? A simple, "Oh hey guys, you've overdonated by $200, but I'll be using it for something useful to you guys like a new webcam" would be nice. Ppl asking for donations just need to be more upfront.
Not one of them is going to say, "I'm streaming to profit from your donations". But it happens. And probably more than most of us think. So if they won't outright say that, then I'll be the one who at least puts that warning out there.
(I'm just giving the example of a streamer ... this applies to anyone online who asks for donations/money)
If you wanna still donate, go right ahead.

as long as the donations help improve the stream im fine with it. stuff i would bundle in that category include new mic, hardware, screen, etc. if its for personal stuff, then im strongly against it
|
I don't care at all to be honest, even if the guy is bad. I mean people aren't forced to give him money. It is their choice.
|
TL community is so generous with other people's money
|
To clarify the official TL stance on this, requesting donations on TL pages is not permitted unless approved by an administrator. This includes your stream description or stream thread, but does not include asking on the stream itself or in the stream chat.
We may remove streams if the stream quality is affected by too many requests for donations; the focus of streams should be on gaming not making money.
