So I'm going to present you with two conferences identified as conference A and conference B, and discuss some of their bowl games. Then you people are going to discuss the conferences. And I'm sure most of you can figure out what teams and conferences I am referencing; I am keeping them anonymous just to get you thinking

Conference A:

One team ranked in the top 15 loses it's bowl game against another top 15 team (that happens to be in Conference B). The loss comes on a field goal with about a minute left, but the team completely mismanaged the clock (second time this season) and commits stupid penalties that keep them out of field goal ranges.

Another team absolutely blows out their opponent in a BCS bowl. However, the losing team had it's head coach leave in the weeks leading up to the game, as well as having the interim coach (and offensive coordinator) announce that he was leaving after the bowl game.

A third team wins a close game in overtime. However, against a Conference USA opponent, they do not convert a single third down and only win because the opposing kicker missed four field goals that would have won the game.

Oh, and I should mention that one of these teams did win the national championship. Congrats to them and the conference, but do bear in mind that the other team's starting quarterback (the winningest quarterback in FBS history) lasted just 5 plays before getting injured. And barring a freak interception return for a touchdown...

Conference B:

In two BCS games, conference B teams dominated teams deemed to be too fast or too athletic for them. Instead, both of those teams were absolutely shut down by the defenses of the Conference B teams, and the offenses were able to do more than enough against defenses that were supposed to be too fast for them.

Outside the BCS, take a look at the first team under conference A, because the next team in conference B was the one who beat them. Chalk up another win.

And next, we see another conference b team knock off a top 15 team. This time, after a kick-off return that should have been a touchdown yielded a touch down, the Conference B team comes back and dominates for two-thirds of the game, and then hangs on for dear life.

Other teams didn't do as well, although two of the other losses were by three points or less. Overall, Conference B went 4-3 in bowls, but 2-0 in BCS bowls and 4-0 against teams in the top 15 when they played.

So...

What do you think?

everyone knows what conferences you are talking about.

the Big 10 isnt better than the SEC but the SEC is extremely overrated. Overall the SEC, Big 12, and Big 10 are all pretty even, you could probably throw the Pac 10 in there too.

1) This was an extremely poor year for conference A. One of two perennial powerhouses with a feline mascot has been on a steady decline and it was no different this year. The other only beat one ranked team and was heavily overrated in the polls by reputation alone. The son of an anonymous legendary NFL defensive coordinator was a train wreck as a gameday coach in 2009.

2) This was an extremely good year for conference B. They managed to produce four 10+ win teams, which had not happened since 2003. A certain vest-wearing coach got his first bowl win in 4 years (2 of the 3 previous bowl losses came against teams from conference A).

3) There are no teams from conference B which are as good as the top two teams from conference A.

4) Conference B has an inappropriate name, no conference title game, and most of its games get the early time slots because no one wants to watch them in prime time. No, none of this has anything to do with anything.

Basically, the Big Ten was not much worse than the SEC this year (in fact they were fairly even), but many stars had to be aligned to make it happen. The SEC gets overrated every year but its quality of play on average greatly exceeds that of the Big Ten.

Pac 10 should definitely be included. We're about as underrated as the SEC is overrated. We get very little respect because we A) Don't schedule nonconference cupcakes (at least not to the level others do) and B) There's enough parity in the conference that it's almost impossible for the best team to have an undefeated season. Admittedly this was a bad year for the Pac 10 in bowls, far worse than I expected, but given results the past couple years (5-0 last year, etc.) I'm putting that down to the "any given Saturday" factor for now.

For the OP: Since I didn't pay any attention to Big Ten bowls other than the Rose Bowl, so I dunno what other games you might also be talking about, but saying the OSU offense overperformed expectations against a defense that was "too fast" for them is stretching IMO. Ohio State's offense did about what I would have expected; their defense did contain the Ducks' spread-option much better than predicted though.

I recall in the Orange Bowl, the Big 10 Iowa defense humiliated the Georgia Tech spread offense that was suppose to be this awesome high scoring machine. Most analysts had predicted that Iowa's defense would crumble and had them as 7-10 point underdogs, but the underrated Big 10 came through.

It's our way of life down south. With relatively little NFL teams down south, most people are extremely passionate about College Football. I'm guilty of this as well.

I was in New Orleans... it's fucking crazy the passion that people have for LSU (and the Saints). I must tailgate the Georgia- Florida game next year....

SEC owns bitchesssss.... I think their dominance is definitely overrated a tad, but it's definitely the top conference. The quality of the teams top to bottom is just a lot better overall.

id say the bottom teams suck just as much as any conference. The only difference the SEC has had the past few years is one REALLY strong team. Aside from that one team the conference hasnt been any better than any of the other major conferences save the Big East and ACC.

It's really luxurious being an SEC fanboy. I can just pull out simple statistics to make my case while you have to jump through about 20 hoops.

Same thing happens in Iowa, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and other midwest states, just with Big Ten/12 instead of SEC/ACC
