Note 1: A lot of the sections are her own thoughts (it is a journal after all) and some are SC related, and some aren’t. If you don’t get certain passages, it’s alright, because I don’t get all of them either.
Note 2: In China, the traditional belief is that you age when it hits January 1st, regardless of your birthday - similar to the “Korean Age” in a way.
Note 3: In Chinese, it’s common to blame everything on “God” (or Heaven, actually). The old phrase goes “Man proposes, and God disposes”. It may seem like she implies that the Starleagues are rigged, but actually she means God is toying with us or something like that.
Note 4: In this half of the world, we try to get out of our homes as fast as possible, but in China, it’s common for university students to miss their homes because of their friends and families.
Correction to Note 4:
Emlary said, initially, she really wanted to leave her home as well and that’s why she chose a university that’s half a country away. But in her later years, as she matured, she started to understand the importance of home. She believes that everyone is like that regardless where you are from – when you are young, you want independence, you want freedom; but as you get older, you start to miss your home, and in English, it’s called “Nostalgia”.

It is excellent that six former OSL champions ended up in four different groups. However, the three recent winners are bundled in group A like darts on a dartboard, A is obviously the group of death. According to the new OSL rules, two people advancing from the same group will not meet again until the OSL Final. The candidates for this OSL’s champion are pretty obvious since the beginning due to the skill differences in this OSL, which makes it dry and predictable the whole time.
Reach has always been the centre of attention, the apple to fans’ eyes. However, things did not go as Reach planned when he chose Jju. Last season, the EVER league, was another peak in Reach’s career, but this time, he is alone – the only Protoss in the league. Hoping to resurrect Protoss like Nal_rA did, Reach takes the challenge. What he wanted was two Terran players and one Zerg in his group, but OSL has always been a league that requires both skill and strategic planning, which Reach lacked. Instead, Reach got two Zerg players and one Terran. Unless you are absolutely dominating, no one is willing to help you. Last season, both Zeus and Ra wanted to choose Oov because Oov was an unstoppable machine at that time, they just wanted to be the second one to advance, and Oov could care less as of whom to pick, so his choice would likely to be in favour of Zeus of Ra.
Why do I hate Doggi? Because he always wastes one of the precious spots, what’s worse is that he ruins OSL for the other players as well. Doggi picked Yellow to be in the same group as BoxeR. Being greedy and sly, Doggi successfully planned out a tragedy for this OSL – an OSL filled with revenge – similar to Hamlet I guess.
Oov is the simple and frank type, and those people usually put themselves into problematic situations. He chose a weak opponent, but Clon decided to mess with Oov and chose July, then Nada tagged along. Being in the group of death, can Savage break the OGN curse? We will find out shortly.

Because of Clon, Group A is deemed as the group of death. Also because of his personal reasons, Oov was forced to play July (week 1 matches should be Seed vs. first choice, but Clon didn’t show up, so Oov had to play July). I believe it happened because of the OGN curse, Oov is bound to lose. It’s been a tradition of OGN to have the seed player play against his first choice, but this tradition is broken today by July. Luckily, July (a.k.a. Oov killer), followed the rules of the OGN curse and successfully defeated Oov.
Unfortunately, after the Group A match, the other three matches are unsatisfactory with the exception of GoRush vs. Sync. GoRush is great at showing off his talent, and his matches are always worth watching. But is that enough for me to give my weekend prime time to OSL?
At the same time, in university, we were secretly forming an alliance trying to bring back our internet connection even by means of violence. One day, I met our principal, and he was extremely easy to talk to, almost too easy. After long hours of gruesome negotiation, we finally got our Internet back.
Back to OSL, the map I hate the most has to be Alchemist. I am a big fan of the anime, but that map is total garbage. I wonder if alchemists have the acupoint of death because whoever spawns at 3:00 is bound to lose.

At this rate, the three former OSL champions in Group A will have to go into sunder death. At the same time, what’s happening in Group B is just what the audience wanted – 2 superstars and 2 random chobos that no one cares about. Although we all enjoy matches between BoxeR and Yellow, if it happens every single time, then there really isn’t much to watch.
My Christmas was pretty terrible – going around with my desktop and trying to fix my motherboard. Luckily, there is nothing that can’t be solved with money; and also, I got the school’s bus driver to go with me so I didn’t have to take the bus or walk. When I returned to my residence, the mother instinct (as in, the desire to take care of people, the desire to nurture) of my roommates was suddenly ignited – free dumplings, YAY!
Up to this point, my Christmas eve was awesome (mainly because of the free food), just when I was about to celebrate, TopTatent sent me database of the gallery site that were on his server. That was probably the worst Christmas present ever. He told me to back up my files, and when I find another server, my gallery would come back up again.
Shortly after, he announced to public that he could no longer provide service for the SC community. TL, Yaoyuan, BWChart, and a series of SC-related websites were forced to find new servers, or to get terminated permanently.
“Tomorrow is another day”, someone will always come forth when there is a need for them to surface. Only Waxy and I continued to ponder the reasons for TopTalent’s sudden disappearance. Earth will continue to revolve regardless who died – Mike was soon forgotten or neglected at least by the vast majority. It was not an easy task to figure out what he was up to. Waxy and I eliminated numerous possibilities and asked countless number of people about him, but to no avail. Finally, we shook our heads and decided to give up. The mystery of TopTalent was much more difficult to investigate than the disappearance of Mensrea and the identity of Smuft. No one knew what happened to him and where he was, and I still don’t know he gave 110% of his effort to SC, he poured in money and time, and even his soul. In the end…He left.
I finally finished composing a terrible post on TL in English, depicting the stories of the collaboration of me, mr0919, TopTalent and all those who worked with us (this post can be found http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage-22036.html). Two years ago, when I first set foot on TL, I was hoping one day, I could write something to make those white guys cry, but today, what I received after typing up that post was the sound of my own tears dropping onto my keyboard. Faintly, I recall TopTalent telling me how he wanted to purchase a house near the Western Lake (a famous lake in China, and I happen to study there right now). Not too long ago, a crappy house near that lake was sold for more than 100 million Yuan (it worth about ¼ of that price). The chance of me meeting him again would be less than selling another house like that for 100 million.

Paying full attention to Group A, the match that has been delayed was finally played, Oov vs. Clon. Oov still lost. Oov’s loss caused chaos in Group A. The sexy Clon from three years ago unleashed his fury on the Cheater Terran (OSL from 3 years ago was known for the naked photos of the progamers). I suddenly laughed, for Oov’s fate was now in the hand of NaDa. As long as Nada defeats Clon, Oov would be out.
What’s intrigueing about the Group matches is the mental battles between the competitors. What’s more interesting is that even the order of the matches can affect the final outcome. For example, in Group B, if Doggi were to play Max last, it would not have made a difference to Max, but instead, BoxeR was eliminated, and Doggi advanced.
Reach lost again, but we all know that he would be eliminated eventually, so that had almost no impact on me. The Protoss Race (I use Protoss btw) will rise again in the next OSL.
What followed this round was the end of the year of 2004, the year of 2005 meant the end of my teenage life. I matured a lot in this year, but along came pain, frustration and fatigue. I couldn’t help hoping to return to my home city, I was eager to get back my identity.

Nada humiliated Oov by eliminating him indirectly. “I advance, you go home. There is nothing you can do about it ” . Yellow could care less about what other people thought of him. He got his longed revenge and finally defeated his archnemesis – Boxer. Losing to Boxer 3-0 was not such a big deal in my opinion, but because of his personality, to him, it was the worst pain possible.
Is this the end to Yellow’s revenge? No, far from it.

iloveoov > NaDa on Dream of Balhae
Doggi > Yellow on Alchemist
Reach > Saferzerg on Neo Guillotine
GoodFriend > Gorush on Neo Guillotine
The last of the group A matches was between Oov and Nada. It’d must been painful on Oov’s part because the result of this game would not affect the final outcome. Before Oov became the OSL champion, he must had sworn to himself to become the champion and then break the infamous OSL curse. When he finally achieved his first goal, it was only then when he realized how hard it was to advance. Although he defeated Nada, it was all too late.
At the same time, we finally got to see the real intention of Yellow. He said, “Doggi played an outstanding game”, but no one really understood what happened in that match: did he lose on purpose to screw BoxeR over, or did Doggi really play a good game. If he had won this, BoxeR would have a better chance to advance. If Yellow lost this game intentionally, he must had had an enormous amount of faith in Max to take out BoxeR, or he would be in trouble. The relationship between Yellow and BoxeR is mystical yet mysterious. Always being second to BoxeR, Yellow never complained, but in the end, what he gained was the humiliation of three consecutive bunker rushes. Best friends and favourite opponents, what’s newly added between those two was a wall of vengeance and hatred. I wonder how those two felt themselves – regret, or feeling of accomplishment.
“Your life will be the same – with or without me”
But my life has already changed because of your presence, leaving will not undo the damage that’s already done.
Hungrily and compassionately, Yellow revenged his loss and took another step towards the OSL plateau.
OSL is more than just talent, more than just a competition. What are involved are countless mental battles between the players. The new OSLs are different from the older OSLs, when people played to have fun, to make friends.
I received my train tickets to go home… to put everything behind me for a while. Life is just like a moving train, there is no turning back. There should not be any regret.

I was woken up by the announcement that was played across the train. When I opened my eyes, I saw the sapphire-blue sky and the topaz-orange sun. I knew I was near home! The second I stepped onto my hometown, I felt rejuvenated. The skies lit up, the birds sang music to my ears.
The last round of the first section of this OSL was watched at home – my real home. Everyone received what they deserved. I did not feel sorry for BoxeR, for he did not try, he did not care, and he dug his own grave. Gamers “play to win”, and that involves many forms of “play”: Some practise, some think, and some cheese. Cheese will not always work and is obviously unreliable - BoxeR needed to understand that.
Along with the results, the list for the advancing players was also generated, and there was not much going on before the 28th. I decided to read some books, spend some time with my parents, and hang out with my high-school friends: Long story short – Enjoy the vacation.
No one from SKT T1 advanced, and that was a shocker. If you lose your guard for even a fraction of a second, you will get eliminated from the battle field of OSL. As for the elimination of Reach and the advancement of Saferzerg, we’ll settle this by saying it’s because of karma (or some random things, doesn’t have to be taken seriously). OSL has always been like this, many small unpredictable things.

Feb 4th Quarters Week 2

Those two weeks seemed more interesting than they actually were. Although the four 2-0 scores may be appealing, but there was not much action going on. The majority of the fans were happy at least because the popular players advanced. This is why OSL in general is interesting. Those quarter finals were the turning point of this OSL.
It’s a tradition to move out of the studio for the first round of the quarter finals. This time, they went to a ski resort. As well, they got some WEG participants as spectators. Why would they be interested to watch other gamers getting rich and famous in the cold? It just seemed so inhuman to me. Wouldn’t they get jealous?
MadFrog was there…he must felt terrible. In 2001, he placed top 3 in Starcraft in WCG, but he converted to WC3. He only won one WWI title and two silver medals in ESWC. What he left behind in Korea was nothing but an unsuccessful and depressing progaming career. He is a genius, but he failed to realize that WC3 can never be paralleled with SC. He quit his progaming career at an early age. Later, MBC released the infamous scandal of the rigged maps. At least MadFrog did not win a tainted title like Dayfly. You have my respect, my Frog Prince.
The only VODs I rewatched (I usually watch them live) are the matches between Yellow and NaDa. The storm-zerg’s famous ZvT style were not observed in those games. After revenging his 0-3 loss, yellow completed his mission in this OSL, and lost to NaDa willingly.
Another interesting fact is that GF finally defeated Midas, who has always had his numbers. Other than that, there was nothing else interesting in this OSL (up to this point at least). Comparative to the MyCube league, with BoxeR going into overtime with Kingdom, Nal_rA and Zeus battling for the two spots to advance into the semis (different format), this OSL is as boring as a televised Golf game (Emlary did not say this, I did ^^).
Oh well, there is always the next one.

Time flied by, and it’s time for me to return to school. It’s usually my dad’s role to accompany me to the train station, but this time, my mom insisted. My mom and I look tremendously alike, and it is extremely easy to tell that we are related even in a large crowd, and suddenly, I realized the true meaning of this great idiom: “Blood is thicker than water” (look it up if you don’t know what it means).
The train started, and the first match of the semi-finals was also on its way. After the boring quarter finals, those semi-finals were something to look forward to; they should provide us enough action to keep us excited till the OSL Final. Since the beginning of 2005, there have been endless battles between Nada and GoRush: MSL Winner’s Final in Jan. and MSL Grand Final in Feb. Those matches were truly amazing. GoRush came back from his loss and defeated NaDa in the first BO7 series ever. His popularity sky-rocketed and he was praised by all. My elder brother was doing a live broadcast for me via text messages over our cell phones (text messaging is extremely popular in China and maybe other Asian countries). 0:2 behind, then a 3:2 victory, my brother told me it was one of the best series. Days later, after seeing the third game, I stopped watching the rest. Nada has already won by that point. There was no need to continue watching. To me, it was extremely similar to the first semis match between Oov and Reach in the EVER OSL. Forty minutes long, filled with endless clashes between Zerg and Terran troops. Both players demonstrated the most logical resource distributions and uses of spells. The game was filled with violence and gore; both intelligence and skill were showcased. It was no coincidence that NaDa’s confidence boosted after that match – he realized how strong he was.
That game was one of the very few matches that were worth watching. The newborn vigour of GoRush vs. the burning desire of NaDa: this collision guaranteed the best matches in SC history.
Those two are both only slightly over 20, but they are the veterans in the SC scene. This was the match between two geniuses, and the result – two heroes.
The only flaw between the five games of NaDa vs. GoRush happened in the first game, where NaDa raided Rush’s base with 2 marines and 2 medics killing countless drones and lings. In the end, NaDa gave it all away. Maybe because NaDa treated it as an opportunity to show-off, maybe he was too excited to meet GoRush again. NaDa’s decision-making in that game was not first class.
To me, they are both winners. It doesn’t matter who advanced, both of them would have produced the best OSL Final for the audience.
At night, I woke up whenever the train stopped and I seized those opportunities to capture the banner of each station. Why was I taking pictures? I wasn’t sure, and I’m still not sure. Was I trying to preserve that part of my memory or to forget it?
“What part of your memory is selective and tends to forget?” Alanis Morissette sang this and it fitted my emotions.
July’s fate was still to be determined. “It’s going to be so exciting,” I thought. But I was wrong. Nothing could be taken for granted in OSLs.
Feb 25th Semi II
July vs GoodFriend
1: GoodFriend > July on Neo Guillotine
2: July > GoodFriend on Alchemist
3: GoodFriend > July on Dream of Balhae
4: July > GoodFriend on Requiem
5: July > GoodFriend on Neo Guillotine
July 3:2 GoodFriend
Many people thought July was going to sweep through GF 3-0. It’s just so impractical to have NaDa and GF in the finals facing each other (unlike Oov vs. BoxeR in EVER OSL). Some people called this “The battle between the GFs” – God of Fight (July’s nick) vs. GoodFriend. Many people don’t understand why GF chose his ID to be “GoodFriend”, it just seemed so random and weak. On the other hand, too bad there isn’t a title similar to “Pesticide” (Boxer’s nick) for Terran-Killers like July.
Many people speculated that GF was really a pawn of NaDa. If that’s true, then 2v1 really does exist in OSLs because those two put on a spectacular partnership in this OSL.
The semi-final is a separation like for some players that they can never pass through regardless how hard they try – like Control and Junwi. If you can consistently go into he Finals, worst comes to worst, you’ll be called “Mr. Second” or “Mr. Consistent” like Yellow and Chojja, but 3rd and 4th get almost no recognition afterwards. It is the same for any other competitions as well, not just SC. Unfortunately, GF belongs in this group.
Differing from GoRush’s conceited appearance, July looks… strange. Even at the Gillette Final, the “watermelon” appearance (he dyed his hair red) was more of a joke, not a style or a characteristic. I always felt that July has got to be the strangest OSL champion. Although Oov looks even worse, but Oov was already known as the Cheater Terran with many MSL titles before he finally got his OSL title. XellOs looked just as bad before Olympus, but “Perfect Terran” was also known by all. As for Reach, Kingdom and Nal_rA, they were all famous gamers before they received their OSL titles. No one knew about July, he just appeared out of online tournament like WGT and won Gillette. He is truly different from all the others.
Thinking back to when TopTalent made his announcement, mr0919 also told me that he would be busy this year with his studies and career. Today, he released the news that this OSL will be the last one he can encode due to his new job. I feel happy for him, but at the same time, a stronger emotion of regret.
Every week, there would be people waiting for the new VODs, but there aren’t as many as you may imagine. They all left nice things to say and sent their best wishes to mr0919, but they knew there would always be a new Mr0919 who will encode the VODs. mr0919 will fade from their hearts and will eventually disappear at the appearance of the next encoder.
I returned to Hangzhou. At night, my arthritis tortured me (due to the change in weather) but I was finally able to go to sleep. Only in incubus can you discover the worst fear buried deep inside your heart. I forced myself to wake up, staying calm and trying to forget my dream. But memory cannot be wiped clean, especially when you are weak because of physical pain.
When I was feeling down, my brother was always the one to comfort me:
“My dear,
don’t fear,
I’m here”
March 2nd 3/4 Final
Gorush vs GoodFriend
1: Gorush > GoodFriend on Neo Guillotine
2: Gorush > GoodFriend on Requiem
3: Gorush > GoodFriend on Alchemist
Gorush 3:0 GoodFriend
I’ve seen many group photos involving NaDa and GF. They have the same birthday, are in the same team, use the same race, are at similar ages, and they both appear to be the sensitive/introverted type. The only difference is that NaDa is two years older. But those two years are making a world of difference. NaDa has won an OSL title long before GF’s appearance, and GF can only be the minor character.
This season, GF proved his potential by advancing with a 3-0 record, seemingly, he’s almost caught up to Nada, but the loss against July and the 0-3 defeat against GoRush dragged him back to where he started.
There is a reason why I love GoRush and his childish arrogance. Comparative to the previous 3rd place games, Rush made this one memorable. He made the games interesting, and more importantly, he won with a 3-0.
The three-hatch guardian combined with his effective timing showed, once again, his top-rated skills. A person who has faith in himself can defeat GF, who has super talent but lacks confidence, with minor ease.
I believe that one’s mentality is the most important part of the game. Almost all progamers have levelled skills, so strategic thinking and mentality will determine the winner. I strongly believe that GF will become the second yellow – sensitive, passive, always one step away from #1, always trying and desiring. I like this type of gamers, the auras of the champions glow because of those people – they emphasize the winners, they are the foils in Shakespearean plays.
Strangely, OGN placed two groups of dual league, 3rd place, and OSL Final in one week. It would take at least three weeks if it were other seasons. They’ve always wanted to make the seasons as long as possible, but this time, they are rushing it. It seemed suspicious to me.
It’s probably because of the arrival of the spring break. Last year, the OSL Final was scheduled after the break. As a result, we got Nal_rA who gave up his vacation and practised the whole time. Speaking of the NHN OSL, it seemed like last week rather than a year ago. At that time, I was looking for an escape of life, but now, my new journey of life must start anew. I must mature. I must learn to let go, learn to forget.
Oscars are fun to watch because I can understand them.
OSLs are fun to watch because I can’t understand them.
After getting acquainted to something, you love it, hate it, and cannot live without it.
March 5th Final
NaDa vs July
1: NaDa > July on Requiem
2: NaDa > July on Alchemist
3: NaDa > July on Neo Guillotine
NaDa 3:0 July
In the recent months, all NaDa has been playing was TvZ, including the loss against Clon in the SKY grand final. Although his schedule was busy, but relative to Pusan, who did not even know who his opponent was going to be – whether Terran or Zerg – until two days before his games, NaDa had more than enough time to get prepared.
Speaking of Pusan, the 3rd place matches were on Wednesday, and the Dual was placed on Friday. Finally, he found out he was going to play GF, but at the end, he still got eliminated. Actually, the pressure on GF was enormous as well. He had to play in the Dual to secure a ticket for the next OSL right after losing the chance to get seeded. No wonder he let out a long sigh after losing to GoRush. Winning his first game, then losing two games in a row, Pusan threw it all away. Although I never liked him that much, but I still felt sorry for him. The gate to OSL finally opened up, but he was always one step behind. What’s ahead of Pusan is another season of struggling and waiting.
After finishing the final matches, I started to regret forgetting to watch the Dual of Group F. The Dual was probably more exciting than this OSL Final. OGN put up the banners labelled “Who can match Garimto and BoxeR?”, and even I fell for their lure and wanted to see the sequel to the KTF Semis.
July has been known to be the “Savage Killer”, but not the “Prince Killer” unfortunately. Today, July was murdered by Nada. First match – 12 vs. 3 – the closest position possible. Second match – 3 O’clock spawn – spot of death. July must be angry with his luck. Don’t try to tell me that the starting locations don’t matter to progamers, because they do. They affect the mental state of the gamers, which is critical at this stage. The better you are, the more superstitious you get. Because their skill levels are so similar, the littlest things can make a world of differences.
The latency was terrible for the third match. My brother told me that if Yellow was playing, he might be able to pull it off.
July had the advantage on Guillotine because of the starting locations, but at that time, July cared less, he gave up. Just like Chojja two years ago, it finally happened again, 3-0, the second time by NaDa in OSL history.
The second the last match finished, I thought of mr0919. Although I wanted July to win, the disappointment in July was minimal comparative to the retirement of mr0919. At this time, he has already encoded and uploaded the VODs, then he posted his message on TL and left us forever (until today, he encoded WEG finals ^^). But what was I doing?
Recalling our partnership, I pulled TopTalent and mr0919 together via MSN. No one bothered to be polite, to break the ice, we were blunt about it: “Let’s work together”. Following that was countless late-nights of VOD encoding and uploading. The three of us actually watched the least VODs and played the game the least. Why did we continue? Maybe because of the hollow fame over the internet we were trying to establish? Yeah right!
Is VOD sharing really something worthy of getting ourselves killed?
We did not speak much to each other, but deep down inside, we know that we are good friends. And mr0919 is keeping the BoxeR DVD-rip for me, TopTalent shares his account with me.
I did nothing. I am nothing.
Over the year, drifting from place to place made me miss more games than I wanted. For example, the EVER league, I only remember things that happened after the semis, and so I couldn’t write anything about it. I’m starting to develop more interest in life, I don’t want to dedicate that much to SC anymore.
Going back to the OSL Final, the real final match happened on Dream of Balhae between Rush and NaDa. Other than one TvT game he lost to Oov, Nada played 12 TvZ games. So what if his TvZ is the best?
After defeating BoxeR in OSL, on the day after Valentine’s Day, Yellow, once again, defeated and hence eliminated Boxer in Dual Group B on Guillotine. And that is the end of BoxeR and Yellow, they will never be the same – to us, or to themselves.
“One day, you will realize, your life will not be different without me”.
”I might want to marry you one day
If you watch that weight and keep your firm body.”
