I know a lot of people here love the Battlefield franchise as a whole, and I know I loved Battlefield 2.
While nothing has been officially announced (e.g. no release date, etc.), it's well know DICE is working on BF3. I just came across this:
Putting extraordinary effort into this release The promise of a more robust version of Battlefield 3 on the PC is something that DICE has talked about in the past, but it does seem that they fully intend to put the special effort into making the PC version something very special.
The latest news comes from lead designer, David Goldfarb, who was quoted in a recent tweet as saying, “We are putting special effort into the PC version; even for us, it’s extraordinary.” The news comes hot on the heels of an exceptional resurgence of Battlefield play on the PC after the release of the Battlefield Vietnam add-on for Battlefield: Bad Company 2.
While little is actually known about Battlefield 3, we do know that DICE and publisher Electronic Arts are planning for a release of the title toward the end of 2011. What comes as more of a surprise is that the PC version will apparently jettison support for Windows XP, and PC owners will have to upgrade to either Windows Vista or Windows 7 to play Battlefield 3.
A beta for Battlefield 3 is planned for those that purchase Medal of Honor. DICE will be releasing Battlefield 3 on the PC as well as the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It is expected that players will get a real first look at what DICE has in store after an upcoming talk at GDC in March takes place with a more in depth reveal in June at E3.
Battlefield 3 has yet to be formally announced by EA, other than the references to it during earnings discussions and the news of the beta that was included with Medal of Honor. Sources confirm to us that you can expect EA and DICE to make a formal announcement soon; and they suspect that EA will tell us of a potential date for the start of the multiplayer beta as well as the actual proposed ship date for the release of the game.
Source.
It's interesting that they're dropping support for XP. This is the first project I've heard of that's explicitly doing so.
I preordered Medal of Honor, so I will be in the BF3 beta. I can't wait, especially because they're promising something special for the PC players. (Take that, console players that almost always get everything months before the PC players.)
I'm curious what this special thing will be. My guess is it's either something small that doesn't really affect gameplay, but that only the PC version will have, or maybe it'll be something amazing. Maybe servers will support up to 128 players or something...

They've talked about unlocking content for BF3 via the F2P BF that's currently in Beta. Not sure if I like that.
Aside from that, I'm looking forward to a new Battlefield title, having recently become a fan due to BF:BC2. But I hope BC2 will last a little while longer before it's replaced by a new toy.

Hmm. Only thing i care about is if Blacksand studios will Mod it lol

Hm, I don't think I like that idea much, either. I applied to get into that beta, too. I wonder if I'll get in.
I think that BC2 and Vietnam will last quite a while. Even though they're less hardcore than BF2 and what I'm sure BF3 will be like, the game is still a ton of fun.
I also wonder if BF3 will make use of the veteran status system or not, and if it does, I wonder what we'll get.
What I'd like to see in BF3: - More maps (some infantry oriented, some vehicle oriented) - Huge player limit - More of a modern setting - Lots of weapons - Lots of attachments - True stats tracking

I can't wait to see what improvements it'll have over Battlefield 2. I'm anticipating something on the scale of the Squads / Commander concept they introduced in BF2. I felt that while Bad Company and Bad Company 2 were excellent games with amazing terrain destruction technology, I think they felt a bit too much 'made for consoles'.

BC1 was only on consoles IIRC, and DICE even said they wanted to include the PC for BC2.
I can't find the link, but at one point DICE did basically right out say that they wanted the BC franchise to be its own thing, and while it would be in the same genre as the other BF games, and also that it wouldn't be so hardcore. It's supposed to be more...arcadish.

BF3 is gonna be great.
They said it will be PC first, so it has a chance to be great.

Imagine BF3 with the amount of players like they have in the PS3 game MAG.

I agree with some of the other posts, and I'd also like to see a return to BF1942 style a bit, with huge maps and many more vehicles, aka fighters, bombers, etc. Of course, smaller infantry focused maps would still be around I am loving BFBC2 but kinda miss the old BF1942 aspects of the BF franchise!
Note, I didn't play BF2 so I don't know about the vehicles there, I guess there were planes though

I can't wait. Hopefully dice will have made a few balance changes though, especially to BF2's weak AA - seeing somebody with 50 kills and 1 death from whoring a J-10 for an entire round wasn't that much fun.

I'm pumped for battlefield 3, expecting a great game. Loved 1942, one of my favorite games ever. BF2 was also a phenomenal game, i passed on 2142, and BC2 is another great one. Franchise should only get stronger, hopefully DICE continues off this successful branch and expands it even more. I'm debating getting moh just for the beta!
|
BF2 is such an amazing game, but it has so much wrong with it client side that it's unplayable for some. I remember trying to run it on a "modern" system when it was first released, and taking around 10 minutes just to load a map, then I had to run the risk of being dropped instantly. Even on my current PC I still have a lot of problems with it. However, once you actually got into a game it was such a fun time squading up and acting like you were actually in the army.

What happen if you bought your MOH copy in steam do we get a beta for steam?. YES!! BF3 lets go PRONE!!

MOH is terrible, but I really want the beta. Hmm...

I think DICE will continue the franchise even after BF3, and they've said they now consider BC to be its own franchise, so we'll see what happens with that.
And honestly, MoH wasn't that good. The single player was short, but it flowed nicely. I played in the multiplayer beta and just...wasn't impressed. It's basically BC2 light. :\

I remember I downloaded the demo a month before the release of BF2, and loved it. That is, when I could get into a game. The loading times were obscene, and often times the lag was unbearable.
The game is released and I buy it. There's a security problem, so they patch it, which patches in a memory leak. What? Their fix is to uninstall, reinstall, but not download the patch. Hmmm. Eventually I got stuck in this loop of being unable to join servers because of lag or loading times and just quit. T_T I played a bit right up until BC2's release and I loved it, even if there's still glitches and whatnot.

First played 2142 and got hooked. Now I play BC2 and I like it, but it doesn't even come near the awesomeness that was BF2/2142.
Optimistic hopes: - It truly feels like a PC game at heart. - Big big player count and scale, without being pointlessly large - Quirky new combat mechanics - Mods and community support (or some really legit community grows around it) - Not too demanding on the PC - An awesome new game mode
Pessimistic: - It's gonna feel like it was designed for console kids who think it should just be a run and gun type game. - Consoles are gonna hold back the massiveness that BF3 could have been (64 players max and even then it feels as though it was designed for 32 players) - It just won't feel like a real PC game. - Poorly optimized/ graphics aren't as good as they could be - conquest mode only....I would like to see something awesome like titan mode
I have faith in DICE seeing that they actually know how to make well designed games, but I hope they don't get too distracted making the game have "unnecessary badass cool-looking pointless" features that the hardcore fan is not going to enjoy at all. /rant

Fuck BC3, I'd rather see them go back to 2142 and do it right. Talk about wasted potential. That was basically BC2 + sci-fi textures and Star Wars AT-STs. Could have been a lot cooler.
Without a major engine overhaul, I don't know what they can actually improve on.

I'm definitely looking forward to playing Battlefield 3 BF2 had some serious problems with aircraft, and how impossible they were to shoot down, but I definitely think that DICE will learn from their mistakes, and make Battlefield 3 an epic game. I bought the limited edition of MoH so I am supposed to be invited to the beta....For xbox 360 x.x But it should still give me an idea of how the gameplay is. Though I already know I'm going to buy it just because it's Battlefield 3.
