It makes the people involved feel better about themselves and allows them to feel like something is being done about the problem without them actually doing anything. So although they are doing SOMETHING about it, the only people it benefits are the people it already isn't a problem for. TLDR: it's just a massive circlejerk to make people think they're doing something good when really theyre just sucking each other off. Idiocy spreads quickly on facebook and people love to take it right up the ass. By the way, if you get cancer and survive it it's because I put a ribbon sticker on my car. You're welcome first of all, your tldr was as long as the quote itself. moving on to the meat of the post: eh, this is a pretty gross exaggeration of the way most people i know feel about effortless stuff like a car ribbon or changing a facebook picture. it takes two seconds and it strikes up a conversation and that's a start. if it's just a massive circle jerk, then do you know what the pretentious backlash was? a lonely but no doubt rewarding masturbation session. when people started using their statuses to berate those who would dare change their profile picture in support of a cause, they felt great and they felt superior but failed to realize that the point was to talk and think about it. that's been done to some degree, more people are discussing it. is that a bad thing? no, it's indisputably good. no one is claiming that they're personally saving lives, only that a discussion is being provoked. how dare they! this jaded wisdom that allows you (you being you as well as whoever coined slacktivism) to know that people who did this thing will now donate less to charity and do less to prevent violence against kids escapes me. i would bet money that the opposite is true but by no large margin. in the end, it probably makes little to no difference at all in that regard. it's a small thing. what's the problem? i may have missed it, but i saw no one taken a beaten child and go 'you're now safe, YOU'RE WELCOME.' again, it's a conversation starter. are they changing the world in one fell swoop? no. they're just trying to bring up an issue that matters to them. why the backlash? the anti-slacktivism stuff is a cute little meme that people seem to take for fact or something like it. the hypothetical awful person described above (who thinks that he is accomplishing something very significant with his facebook status/ribbon) does not exist in any numbers. i dont know them at least. it's funny, i didn't even do this. i didn't change my profile picture, i don't have ribbons. i personally don't really feel moved to do those things. but i dont think less of anyone who does and if i did, i certainly wouldnt advertise what a pretentious jackass i was to everyone i knew on facebook.

It doesn't affect me, it doesn't affect the people they're trying to "save". It does nothing but give people a false sense of accomplishment. Did it raise awareness? Yeah. Is awareness gonna do anything? Nah. I'm pretty sure we can all agree that we're aware of breast cancer. Awareness raises millions which are then spent on the next awareness campaign which are sponsored by Victorias Secret and a bunch of other celebrities... see where I'm getting at? I don't have a problem with the act, I have a problem with the false sense of achievement but then again I'm not gonna go to their faces and tell them that they're assholes, after all they're doing it because in their eyes it's "good". BTW lol @ my tldr, I suppose it's more of an i.e.

Nah. i dont know. it would be interesting to see what happened to charities this week. also, maybe if the message was altered to include a direct link to anti-violence organizations, maybe it could have been more productive? im not sure.
