If nothing else, it sounds like a great way to get away with/profit off of being a whackjob for a year.
edit: I thought the first letterman interview was hilarious, Dave really killed it, so it was not a total waste.

It's the same as all other "performance art." Complete and utter bullshit.

In all honesty, that is one of the best examples I have seen of an actor using those skills for personal gain, as many people who were given such an opportunity would probably do too.
In other news, Phoenix is still a beautiful man.

Interesting. Nothing too amazingly original nor groundbreaking but still somewhat interesting. Don't agree with him on taking that risk though. I mean, chances were definitely low that people would alienate him but the reward is still probably not worth it.
After finishing the entire interview, it just looks like a piece of crap. What a waste of talent to do such a silly thing. Oh well, that how it is with celebrities, they can afford to do dumb shit like that all the time and still be fine.

it feels more like a sigh of relief, more of a social experiment than anything and honestly I am kinda amused by it all. It feels like a big senior prank. Sometimes we just do things for the sake of doing them just to see a reaction. He got his and i couldn't be happier for him.

There was one problem with this - it was not fun. Joaquin Phoenix is just not interesting enough to make this fun. Most people did not actually care if it was fake or not, and that says a lot.

I think this helped him to grow as a person.

It wasn't really that interesting. Partly because the character was boring, and partly because it was so obvious. It looks like there will never be another good Andy Kaufman.

The movie was pretty crappy as a film in its own right, but I found it interesting to watch after being exposed to the backstory. There's a sort of "meta meta entertainment" dynamic going on here: even knowing that JP is acting, you're not sure how much of the movie is "real" (or whether that actually matters). How many were in on the hoax?
The movie was a bit self-indulgent at times...playing clips of the news media covering Phoenix's staged meltdowns was like running its own little press reel. The film was tooting its own horn there. And the final scene was far too serious for the mediocre work that preceded it.
All that said, I'm still impressed with Phoenix for trying this. The fact that it was a stunt might mean that he's actually crazier than he was acting! I mean, whether pretending or not, he gave up a lot of fame and suffered a lot of derision (and gained a lot of weight) to undertake this project. And that's all real. It gets you wondering: how did Phoenix feel watching himself get trashed in the press for this bit? Could he stay sane (maintain his ego) by reassuring himself that he was just acting? Or maybe he actually wanted to be this person for a year, at least in the public eye?

An interesting idea and a worthwhile thing to try but, from what I understand, a failure. But whatever, trying and failing doesn't make me dislike him at all. The opposite, if anything.

I've never liked Letterman. But damn, he was funny in his 2009 interview. It was good just to see Letterman be himself for a change, actually make some funny jokes and be normal.
This was also good. He grilled him harder this time than last. Not sure whether I'll bother with the movie or not. But good to see Dave flex some comic muscles. An amusing interview.

I didn't watch the movie, but I don't see how what he did was a waste of talent. People know he's a really, really good actor (and that he's fucking crazy—read his wiki. His whole family is whacked). As soon as he wants it, he will get roles again.
If anything, the hoax shows how much we care about shit that isn't really too relevent.

I think the point of having artistic talent is that you're not particularly utilitarian with how you use it.
I still think he's slightly stupid, like most actors, but he's not bothering people so he can choose whatever pet projects he wants. As long as he doesn't kill someone or record a Nickelback song, it's fine. For those who haven't seen it, Two Lovers is pretty amazing.
