My internet provider is going to use DHCP instead of PPPoE. My first reaction to this was "WHY???". I don't quite get it, because PPPoE worked flawlessly and the setup is so easy! Since my internet provider provided minimal info about DHCP, I've tried searching around the internet and did indeed find a lot of information, but it's all too complicated!
I have some questions in this regard, since I know the power of the TL overminds! 1: What's the difference between PPPoE and DHCP? 1b: Which on is better? 2: My internet is going through my router - Does that make any difference when setting up DHCP? 3: What could my internet provider's reason be for switching to DHCP? (They say it's to make things easier...really? Easier than PPPoE?)

DHCP is using full routed TCP/IP/ethernet, PPPoE encapsulates your packets in PPP frames (used by dialup and other legacy telephony systems) because a lot of ISPs date back to dialup and their accounting systems operate with PPP. Therefore, PPPoE sucks because you still have to "dial in" to the Internet even with cable/DSL and you lose a portion of your maximum packet size (MTU) to the overhead of encapsulating packets with PPP framing.
DHCP is easy you just plug in an ethernet cable and you're online, no dialing up or username / passwords to mess with or crappy routers that don't implement PPPoE properly, etc.

I could be wrong but DHCP is just easier. I've had both and the main difference is that DHCP is always on and therefor doesn't require you to "start" your internet connection and it doesn't require any passwords or additional setup besides plugging it in.
Should have guessed rich would be here first :S

So does this mean that you dont have a std phone jack into a dsl modem? i may be ignorant of the tech u guys have running there, so excuse me if this question is senseless.

I'm not sure what it means for XsebT because he's switching, but for me the PPPoE connection was std phone jack but the DHCP internet came through cable (like tv cable)

Hah, now I feel like and old man claiming letters are much better than email because it's easier. Thanks a bunch for your answers! I'm quite relieved now.
