Assuming it is similar to the USA or Canada may not be a good idea. all first world countries have similarly enforced intellectual property laws There really isn't any precedent in the courts concerning the broadcast of esports. Blizzard claims that they have Intellectual property, but no one knows for sure.

KeSPA on the other hand might very well be disbanded or lost their power. I can already see OGN, MBCGame and GOMTV forming a different association (something like a second KeSPA). CJ Media and MBC can do that. But the Big Question will be are there going to be Pro-Gaming teams SC1 style? Or are Progamers going have to play for prize money like the beginning of Brood War? Progamers will live a better life if they're able to earn a steady income from being in a Pro-gaming team.

I think this is awesome news! I really hope that this sudden initiative by blizzard has something to do with Starcraft 2's release! omg.. i'm so excited

The 12 Kespa teams will not be allowed to participate in the GOM-TV Starcraft II tournaments.
Therefore, new Starcraft II specific teams will be formed.
Korean Starcraft II will start at a lower skill level than its 12 broodwar counterparts, allowing foreigners to be competitive at a global stage.
As Starcraft II is a new game, even if the overall skill level of its professional scene is lower, it will still gather audience, both the old broodwar fans and new fans.
Slowly, but surely, some famous broodwar players will make the transition from broodwar to starcraft II, abandoning Kespa. Unless Kespa increase its incentives to the players.
GOM-TV will act as a competitor to Kespa, more human rights and better pay will be granted to the players as a result of the competition.
GOM-TV is willing to reach out to non-Korean scene, a fact that is very much beneficial to us.
This will work out very well. if you like that inferior game called SC II, you mean The problem is that, for all it's flaws, KeSPA is a major reason that BW has become so successful, whereas Blizzard is not. Blizzard has absolutely no idea how to run esports right.
Also, Wax is right, this move could prove bad for the BW scene, which is at a point right now that we can only dream about for SC2. That would be a greater loss than anything. Blizzard makes great games, but it also sucks.

Congratulations, e-Sports. You survived all those little bumps that you went on, survived the winds that tried to topple you, survived a match rigging scandal that rival's MLB's steroid use. All that, to fall to a blizzard.
Who the fuck is blizzard to offer a grace period. What is with this retarded, arrogant attitude that makes them pretend SC is good because "they designed it that way"? No, SC is good because of sheer, dumb luck, not because of your retarded balance team. Intellectual property? more like sheer unadulterated arrogance.

Well from the update in the OP, it seems that they're aiming for a less professional team leagues system and instead focusing more on individual tournaments and clans. Not really sure what to make of this, but it seems a step backward in terms of professionalizing eSports to me...

Brood War was successful because Boxer was an incredibly popular figure who launched BW's popularity as a sport into the stratosphere. All you had to do was make sure his games were on TV and you would have been as instrumental as KESPA was in making BW popular.

Starcraft: Brood War ends August, 2010. I'm looking for a brand new start with SC2.

OGN/MBC Game would be owned by On Media / MBC which are huge broadcasting corporations. KeSPA is essentially the union that represents all of the corporations and entities that make pro-gaming possible in Korea. While KeSPA is its own entity much like a union is, it's really not in that it only exists through the corporations it represents. KeSPA and the corporate sponsors that make pro-gaming possible in Korea are one and the same. This is why we say that KeSPA owns everything. So there's no such think as every KeSPA corporation running to Blizzard and leaving KeSPA in the dust. If that happened, it would mean that KeSPA itself ran to Blizzard since these corporations ARE KeSPA. Wait I'm cofused as shit. I thought Kespa was a players union? I always assumed Kespa licensed its players to the Networks(MLS, OGN). I mean thats why Gom-TV died the first time right? Because Kespa would not license there players to GOM-TV right?
So how does this agreement really hurt Kespa? It seems to me they are in the same boat as before. Kespa controls the players and GOM-TV will have to negotiate with Kespa to use the players. The only thing different now. Is that Kespa can't negotiate with OGN or MSL anymore because they can't broodcast Starcraft anymore. So I don't think this hurts Kespa as much as it hurts OGN, and MSL. They are basicly dead TV networks now unless they start broadcasting counter strike matchs or street fighter or some shit. This is more like a players strike in baseball or football now.
EDIT: Just like to add a congrats to Tasteless, if he did indeed get his old job back!

There's a difference between creating it and then taking credit.
It's like Blizzard had a bastard child, whom they abandoned after milking him for 5 years. Koreans picked them up, fed and nurtured it so the child became successful.
Then Blizzard comes in and says "lol that's cause it's my genes. It has nothing to do with anything else"
It is pure, unadulterated arrogance. There is no other words I can say other than that (other than the fact that I"m probably going to write some ridiculous essay about this soon).
Of course the game was balanced by luck. Just look at SC2, THIS IS THE BLIZZARD BALANCE TEAM PRETENDING TO KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING. They do not. SC just happened to be balanced.

Diablo II? WoW? Warcraft III? damn bro, chill and think about these games. Wildly popular, successful, etc. These games are good because Blizzard knows how to make good games. e-Sports is not going to crumble because of 'arrogant' Blizzard. They're doing the smart thing, and signing off the broadcasting rights to companies that know their shit. Wait and see, you'll find the other side is just as nice.

Yeah how many of those 3 games have successful eSports leagues.
Oh. Wait.
Blizzard does not give a fuck about eSports. They care about milking. All of you are nothing but numbers and $$$$ to Blizzard. If you need any evidence, just look at battle.net 2.0

You really need to stop listening to the little voices in your head. Blizzard, Kespa, the pro-gamers, and the community all contributed towards making BW successful. Blizzard is not taking credit, but simply taking it in another direction. Whether that direction is good remains to be seen, but no need to get so hysterical about it.
