I love TL.net. I love Starcraft. I love Esports.
I mean these things are all really really great. I find the competitive spirit and skill needed to compete at the professional level of Starcraft to be incredibly entertaining and encouraging.
However, I do find the latest criticism surrounding SC2 to be unwarranted.
Starcraft was a great game, it was very entertaining to watch in a professional esports setting because, well, the game sucked.
Unit pathing, AI, scarabs, etc. were all absolutely terrible. However, thats what made the game so great to watch. The pros were able to do things that the majority of the players out there could not do. The weaknesses of the system was what made the game great, epic even.
It also made it impossible to play. A few years after its release, the only people still playing the game were the hardcore players. Those who stuck to the game for its competitive element, those who had the APM, the practice regime, the commitment to play seriously.
Me? I really am passionate about the game, as an College student studying to become a game designer, I find Starcraft to be a shining example of excellent game balance/design. However as a player, Starcraft was one of the most depressing games I played.
I tried as hard as I could but would always get raped in bnet and never rose past a D in ICCUP.
For all its failings, SC2 makes the game finally playable for people like me (and for the majority of gamers out there). I find the current round of criticism a voice of concern by those that are worried about the future of SC2 as an ESPORT. I also find the criticism to be concern by the "SC elites" that their prominence as "elites" is being threatened. The skills are more available, the builder orders are not as APM/skill dependent.
I have a beta key, im not doing amazing (currently gold 1v1 and silver rank 7 in 2v2) but I finally feel like I can compete and enjoy a game I have enjoyed since its birth in 99' (broodwar was really the beginning).
Do I think its perfect? no. The utility at the higher end of the skill level plateaus off. Players are not rewarded enough for being more skilled at the game at the higher levels of play (ie: the current debate over micro).
TL DR; SC2 isn't terrible, just more accessible.

Its Awesome, the only thing terrible is Hot_Bid's Russian Roulette thread.

It's also not THAT much more accessible at high levels. Skill and practice still carry the day - as intended.

its not perfect, but yeah its far from terrible
|
I haven't convinced myself to like it..

I find it pretty boring. Been getting hard to motivate my self to play sc2. (Too much Diablo2 and LoL)
2v2 is so good though. Hopefully it'll be much more played than in broodwar.

That's just sad...

I'm more worried that the game will need some excessive rebalancing, mainly due to pvt.

I don't get the feeling its as revolutionary as SC was for its time. I played shortly after release and was just floored.
But, we are all Expecting that. We are all expecting BW on steroids. It's not going to be.
You have to imagine, if this game came out of nowhere, and you just started playing it. Ya. You'd be floored. For those of us SC:BW fanboi's its hard to disassociate from the original, and hard to reconcile the "losses" in certain aspects of the game. But on a whole... you have to step back and say... "ya, its really amazing."

I don't understand why people say sc1 was too hard to play. You play against the player, not the game.

Not a huge fan, so far.
I've been stomping really bad players with my old D+ BW mechanics and got into a platinum league...now I'm too scared to keep playing 'cause I really have no idea what I'm doing. I just macro macro macro and roll shit over with large numbers -_-.
I like BW more...

SC1 had a lot more limitations in its UI and required a lot of less-than-intuitive mechanics and a lot more actions required to be done at any given time. It most definitely is a fucking hard game to play, especially in comparison to SC2.

this is a fallacy. mechanical skill is another term for the ability to cope with the restrictions put on you by the UI and your wretched husk of a body. overcoming these restrictions is a matter of practice, experience, and discipline, not intellect.
still wholly necessary as far as i'm concerned.

I seriously think that is a trick. Another thing like the TL giving away beta keys to <500 posters will come up again and those people would be wishing they could post.
