What exactly happens when you start it up (beeping sounds, does anything not start). And one last thing if you know, what kind of mother board do you own?
Friend build the comp. Athlon processor. Soyo motherboard(already sent motherboard back to manufacturer and nothing was wrong with it).
When it starts the monitor is on, but no pic appears. The light blinks as if it were asleep. I can hear the OS start up, so as far as I am aware everything else is working fine at startup. In general, the comp is very buggy though.

How did you conclude it's hard drive problem? You don't even need hard drive to get the monitor on.
I didn't personally actually, the friend that build the comp did. It is more of a last resort desperation conclusion then something that was logically deduced.

Take your power supply out of your case, get your Shop Vac and put the hose on so instead of sucking air, it blows air. Then take your power supply outside and blow out all the dust

[Edit]I neglected to read that it's from you shutting down improperly. If that's the case it is probally from your hard drive. I'd try changing the monitor firstly, then work on the hard drive, as for everything else below you can ignore[/]
Well, i looked into a Soyo Manual i had laying around. There are help for monitors that don't start, however yours does occasionally so obviously this is beyond that.
First thing i'd do is make sure the monitor is plugged in and tightend correctly. Then i'd make sure the VGA card and Memory are in (do you know for certain everything is compatible with the motherboard?)
Then i'd update the Video Card drivers. This seems to be the problem in some cases.
If none of that works - the only way for you to fix this is through the process of elimination. Try a different monitor (that's how i fixed mine when this happend), a different VGA, a different hard drive, a different memory stick. Ultimately it would be one of those causing the problem.

Thanks for the help guys

If your computer doesn't turn on correctly, its probably a bad power supply. They are NOT built to last, they are just built for cost-effectiveness. I've gone through 3 or 4 power supplies on my athlon 2000+ already. Power supplies aren't expensive, just go buy one.

Sounds like you have some serious issues, not just the normal ones that come with Windows, ask one of your friends, everyone has that one friend that can fix anything computer related for a 6pack.
|
it's your power supply borrow a friends and test it

Maybe its CIH virus? I heard it deletes your bios or soemthing, in that case your fucked . Psylo, if its buggy, its time to reformat . Generally computers need to be reformatted every 9-12 months, sometimes less if you download alot, or if you do some serious hardcore stuff on it.

If you have a USB keyboard, that might be the problem And make sure your Keyboard+Mouse are both fully plugged in, my computer wouldnt start up when my mouse wasnt fully plugged in...weird

Buy a new power supply and fan. They are often the source of many problems similar to yours.

lol dont listen to all of those who suggestion it might be windows, software prob, harddrive or floppy. you dont even need a fucking harddrive, floppy or cd connected to motherboard to start the comp(get to bootup screen etc). Powersupplies die alot, thats the first thing i would check.
|
I had this problem before(it started randomly after I hit the power switch a 100 times), I had to replace my motherboard which got screwed up by my powersupply unit(I realised this after changing my m-board which had been destroyed by the faulty powersupply). New power supply and a motherboard should maybe do the trick =) If ur in luck its only the powersupply unit.
do u have any warranty left on ur comp ? use it then --;

It's illogical that it's his power supply - seeing how it only malfunctions when he shuts his computer off improperly.

i had problems too with the monitor not turning on at startup, started it up in fail safe mode and reinstalled video drivers, worked like a charm
