There could be some projection there, since they spend a lot of time saying that they don't hold rightwing beliefs like racism and so on, when in truth a lot of them do hold these beliefs, maybe they assume that the liberals who insist they don't hold leftwing beliefs do the same thing as them.

But I guess that’s a reflection of American politics in general? Is anyone even interested in trying to see both sides of things? It feels like people have already made up their minds and are just trying to “win”. I attempt to, there will always be fundamental disagreement on certain values, I mean that’s the nature of having certain core values. How to best implement those values if people do broadly align on them, well that’s ground where one can disagree reasonably, hell even learn something that may change one’s position. It does take two to tango as they say, and I think for many this is frustratingly absent in much discourse. Doesn’t matter if you’re open-minded and acting in good faith if you run into a veritable brick wall of a conversational partner. Enough interactions like that and it’s a pretty natural impulse to say ‘fuck it, why bother?’ and then you have two brick walls! I try not to do this but not always successfully In this specific topic, whether one ultimately concludes Musk is an overly positive figure for various reasons isn’t overall one I expect to necessarily flip around, although I don’t agree with that. I perhaps give him some credit, and have in certain domains, indeed in this very thread, but find his interjections in the political domain pretty darn negative. I do somewhat expect engagement on specific points. For folks who cheered his Twitter acquisition as a victory for free speech, things like a higher absolute and per request ratio removal of material at the requests of various governments, the whole ‘cis’ debacle, arbitrary bans seemingly on Musk’s whim are kinda things one has to address rather than sidestep

Got two actual laughs from me in two posts, you’re on fire today! On November 25 2024 00:32 Nebuchad wrote: Rightwingers have a very hard time differentiating between liberals and leftists, which is infuriating. As infuriating as self-proclaimed open-minded centrists who lean right on absolutely every issue but won’t own it?

That is a good question I think there's a larger chance that a liberal is a good person, because people who don't really follow politics are liberals by default, and I'm pretty sure that the main thing that liberals are trying to achieve in politics is just the capacity to grill, they just don't want to have to do things. Which I can sympathize with, especially when you're satisfied with your life it is easy to just go with things. But when I look at politics alone, it's hard to not hate liberals more because without the complicity of liberals the far right couldn't become a problem. They are obviously wrong on all issues, so they wouldn't be able to convince a significant amount of the population without the playing field being heavily slanted in their favor. Edit: anecdotically in my life I have more conservative friends than liberal friends, so maybe I do lean in that direction I guess. I don't know.

Nothing worse than radical leftists who think and say they are centrists, whether delusional or intentionally misleading. Aww c'mon it's been WEEKS since we've either longed for the genocide of all white men or verbally yearned for the voluntary, nondestructive extinction of the human race. We're not THAT extreme.

I guess I was wrong though, you don't admit it, still trying to hide your blatant bias. The funny part is though, the only people you're managing to fool are yourselves. Perhaps it's your use of the word 'extreme' that betrays that you have a very warped view of the political spectrum. This site has a center left bias with some far left users who are very active and a few right wing users. Even the most extreme person here is NOT extreme in the grand scheme of things. No-one here is taking gallows to the Capitol building, for example, or forming a militia to try and take over their local authority. Using hyperbole and exaggeration is fine but don't expect everyone else to play along as if the hyperbole and exaggeration aren't there. You haven't even contributed to the thread at all except to complain that its an echo chamber and complain that people don't agree with whatever your opinions are (you haven't really told us), leading me to believe that your actual complaint is that it isn't YOUR echo chamber.

There’s a remarkable correlation between folks who claim everything is hyperbolic and if you don’t toe the line you’ll get called a Nazi and those who don’t actually engage with the actual criticisms and arguments presented Or indeed people who complain about echo chambers who only dip in to call something an echo chamber and not engage in any meaningful way that might make a space not an ‘echo chamber’

Hell, they've been arguing that the leading EV car brand is shit and it's only propped up by bullshit government subsidies on green tech. That's basically a Republican talking point. There is no echo chamber here. Support for Trump is impossible from any reasonable, informed centrist. Literally impossible.

Actually, BlackJack's claim about "racist, misogynist, fascist, sexist, transphobic, xenophobic, white supremacist nazi" is only relevant with regards to Trump (and not Elon Musk), as per conversations in the US Politics thread (which is not this thread), so BJ was the one to bring up that topic/guy in here. Regardless, we should try to keep the Elon Musk thread about Elon Musk. As far as I know, Elon Musk isn't a fascist.
