Magnus (I am not aware of anything leaking out of his interaction with tournament staff or other players in the tournament) stated he withdraws and can not discuss why. There could be many reasons for this. This announcement came together with the stream showing increased security and then Nakamura, who really always has been kind of a special character and now has become a youtuber/twitch streamer, suggested the tweet can only mean 2 things, covid or cheating. Which is bullshit, there could be many reasons. Thus everyone deducted that means the withdrawal must be related to cheating... Youtubers/twitch streamers thrive on controversy, so generally they are happy to stoke a fire. During his stream, which I havent watched, I browsed through the youtube compilation, Nakamura is just commenting on what he is seeing: He laughs at poor analysis, he makes fun of a dissappearing accent, he suggests some deeper meaning that really isnt there in Nepo and Firouzja interviews and comments on a past event that Niemann had been caught in online cheating some time ago, which isnt super relevant, people make mistakes. Now clearly Nakamura's behaviour if you copy paste it all together in a compilation is not great, but if you consider it was spread out over a stream and he clearly doesnt like Niemann, well lets just say he is entitled to an opinion. I dont think he actually accused him of anything. Then Twitch chatters and redditors pick this stuff up, make their assumptions and blow everything up like these morons always do and make in into a big accusation, which really hasnt been made and then Niemann naturally has to defend himself. Anyway it seems Niemann got very lucky with opening prep, catching Carlsen in a line he was fully prepared for, something then caused Carlsen to withdraw, there is no prove that Niemann engine cheated during the match as analysed by many GMs. (Although if I were to enginecheat I would never follow computer lines, but try to use assistance at a few critical junctions in the game) But like I said, I havent followed the whole thing, maybe there is more info out there that I missed.

This is very bad, no matter how one looks at it. Shame. Chess definitely deserves better.

Yes, it's correct to say that Nakamura or Carlsen never directly accused Niemann of cheating in the tournament but you can also insinuate someone was cheating without directly accusing them and it's obvious Nakamura's followers are going to eat it up. Yes and that is something I find fully expected of a twitch/youtube streamer like that, who does not like the individual. Viewers should consider that when they watch these channels. The only thing they did I think was really not ok is the name of that video on Nakamura's youtube: "Why M. Carlsen quit", which I guess makes the video sort of an accusation. They just shouldnt have compiled that video at all.

Naka is an entertainer, nothing surprising about it.

Is Magnus having a mental crack up that isn't new for Chess masters or something? https://twitter.com/chess24com/status/1571910045868392448 He needs to take a step back and realise what this looks like from the outside. He might be 100% convinced that there's cheating, but at least deal with it through the proper channels so it doesn't just look like a powerful guy bullying the new kid.
