@MHA: Deku's new power gets explained fairly decently in the manga imho.

Like Gundam seed f.e. it is a deconstruction of the genre and does a pretty good job at making teens piloting a mech actually horrible (a better one than Gundam).
The problem is that all the teens are self-centered unlikeable assholes and the adults are actively worse. To boot the mc is a running inferiority complex with massive insecurities about his sexual urges and it gets dragged in the foreground again and again.
Like it's easy to see why people thought it was revolutionary, but it's imo not fun at all and it's core message is basically "being a teen sucks and here is why, but really convoluted". And if you dig a little deeper, which you have to for the plot to make sense, the chars get even less likeable and more fucked up. So Evangelion can quite quickly reach the point where you just don't care about anyone in the series.
If you want to watch a mecha anime that has some dark undertones I strongly recommend watching Gundam Seed instead, since especially the second half is a lot more interesting from a philosophical standpoint while still remaining satisfying.

To be fair the description is super vague to prevent spoilers and somewhat inaccurate since they do have powers if I remember correctly. I only guessed it because I remembered the hilarious hero name, Green. Also a green costume, kind of like Kermit the frog. I wouldn't had guessed it if it wasn't for that. I must dropped it a few episodes in as I don't remember how it ended.

Well, the story wasn't important, I vaguely remember the ending + Show Spoiler +something with a spaceship, no? but nothing story-related in between.

All I remember about that show was that the 1st two episodes were not really indicative of what the show was actually about lol.

I think it was a pretty interesting show in a way. It did good job being just kind of weird, instead being super duper off the wall weird for shock value where feels like things are supposed to be interesting just because they are SO WEIRD.

Yea I wasn't impressed with Evangelion either. It reminded me of the kind of angsty teen shit I wrote when I was in high school. So maybe it's meant to appeal to teenagers who are actively dealing with that. I watched it as an adult and I just hated every character except for Misato.

The narration and leveling+constant fights is so great. Have any other isekais taken a similar approach? Can't recall a single one. Would recommend the watch for any isekai or curious watchers!
On May 11 2021 08:13 BigFan wrote: The best anime is spider isekai. Probably one of the best done mysteries and decent (aside from the monkey scenes lol) isekais from previous years (yes, it's continuation but still counts!).
Kumoko is probably one of the best and funniest characters I've come across and the way they approach the isekai is great. There are several things to note though. There will be CGI and we are almost at the end, but lots of things will remain unexplained since the story is nowhere finished in the source. Also, this past episode and like the last 5 minutes of previous episodes (don't remember which ones) had the animation dip (lots of 3d or stills etc...). Aside from those, I think you're in for a blast. It's pretty funny and the midway mark gets really heated hehe. Let us know what you think!

I mean I'll never say it isn't a classic. It did HUGE things for the anime industry, I just didn't like it much when I saw it.

I liked Evangelion when I saw it.
I can see why people might not like it though.

I like Evangelion for its edginess and its shock value which was rare for a super robot anime at the time. I also hate most characters, but I still like the story as it is really about exposing the flaws of the characters. It's fun seeing just how low people can get, lol. It definitely had its flaws as a show though especially near the end.

Evangelion is great. Anno is a genius. 3.0+1.0 to come out in August on Prime Video, I'm ready for Anno to do it yet again.

This is really random but today the Gundam Movie came out on Netflix here and I am wondering apart from Gundam/Code Geass/Eva did I miss any mecha in the last decade? All I can remember when I still watched quite a bit was Cross Ange (lol, also a Sunrise thing), Aldnoah zero which I think barely counted, the absolute fucking trainwreck that was interesting and then went batshit which was Valvrave and then ...Darling in the Franxx(lol).
So did I miss anything.
Edit: I almost forgot about MuvLuv TE.

Gridman I believe at least. I don't watch much mechas to say otherwise.

Why do you barely count Aldnoah Zero as a mecha? It's got giant humanoid robots that fight each other, it's as mecha as mecha can be. Anyways there must be about a hundred of mecha anime released over the past decade, just that they weren't popular or famous, so yeah if you can only list 8 mecha anime, you sure missed a lot of mecha.

Edit: I almost forgot about MuvLuv TE. I dont really know if it counts as mecha but there's that one where a mecha pilot gets thrown into a future (iirc it's future?) where the world is flooded and has technology has degraded immensely due to the natural disaster. It's more of a slice of life of him trying to fit into a new society on a huge boat drifting in the ocean.
