In the most recent Student StarCraft AI Tournament (SSCAIT ) finals, up-and-comers Monster and Stardust faced off in a Best-of-7 series that determined the winner. If you missed that series, you can check it out here:
However, after the finals, it came to light that there was a mix-up with how one of the AIs was coded for the maps run by the tournament administrator, and thus, it is believed they did not play to their full potential.
While the (spoiler warning)results of SSCAIT 2020-2021 are final, some people wondered what the outcome could have been if both AI were playing to their highest potential. So, SSCAIT commentator NiteKat (author of BGH Bot ) and I, with the help of the author behind PurpleWave , decided to run a Best-of-9, all games played showmatch between two of the best RTS AI on the planet.
If you are interested in StarCraft AI or AI in general, we think you will be in for quite a treat as these two heavyweights of the scene duke it out over a wide variety of maps! If you are new to SC AI, we are sure that you will see many things that you would never witness anywhere else in the StarCraft world. And for those of you who have already been following the battle for AI supremacy in Brood War, I can promise you that this series will be closer than either of the two previous series between these combatants
We invite you to join the discussion in the SSCAIT Discord channel and to tune in for an awesome showmatch!

To make it worse, Stardust doesn't make Corsairs - and the way that AI can split Mutalisks nowadays, Corsairs rarely hit more than one Muta at a time! I think we're on the cusp of ZvP imba in AI world :'D
Thank you to everyone who tuned in, the YouTube link in the OP will take you the VOD! Cheers~

This is touched upon a bit in the broadcast, but to make a long story short, this is the build that the bot had the greatest win rate against Stardust with, so that is why the bot author instructed it to go with that build against Stardust specifically. Against other Protoss, it went with 3 Hatch Hydra play, but in this case I believe it wanted to do a build that abused the 4 Gate Dragoon build from Stardust (which, presumably, was beating its 3HH play) as well as certain other elements of the enemy's AI!
If you want to see it play (a somewhat non-standard)* 3HH, you can see it here:

It's an interesting thing, trying to rate these AI. You can beat some of even the best AI using cheap strats like making 10 Sunken Colonies and going 2 base Hive Cracklings, for example. However, if you try to play them in a straight up macro game, you might get embarrassed. They have a mix of superhuman abilities and pure potato decision-making at times. On average, I'd say the best AI would probably get to at least C rank if not higher. There are VODs of progamers like Soulkey losing to them.
Consider this: in PvZ, the Hydralisks dodge storm and Reaver Scarabs to the point where no Hydralisks die. There is also an AI that does Biomech and the same thing happens - you storm the Marines, none die. They can be quite oppressive. You can check out a game I played against one of the better AIs here:

Unfortunately the AI we currently have would not work with RM because of changes made to the game But, anyone who is interested in facing AI can do so via SCHNAIL
Nice games! Really appreciated! It would be also very cool to have an AI competition with a limitation on APM, in order to make the games similar to our ordinary human games it would also force the AI to improve more on the strategic level than micro. Anyway, good job!

Thank you! ♡
There is already a limit! But it is very very high haha. The reason why AI use such high APM is because they send commands to each unit, worker, etc. individually, and quite frankly they are nowhere near the level right now where they would be all that strong without these capabilities, as far as I know. If/when an AI beats pros consistently, then I think the conversation will shift to making them more reasonable For now, it's just amazing to see what can be done in the game when playing at superhuman speeds!
