Art style is better, animation and body proportion is worse. Just look at the scene after the first when he wakes up in bed. Apparently the main character legs is only as long as a normal person's knees. Alright, so you can cherry pick an still image as a sign of "bad animation". What about all the power point presentations in the Deen adaption or how it was always going off model?
Also, you think body proportions, of all things, is worse? Like proportions like this are somehow worse proportions than this?

So, what's the deal with the original Higurashi anime? I realize the source is VN so there are different routes. Is there some final unifying point at the end of this anime or am I mostly supposed to consider each route on its own?
For example: + Show Spoiler +The first route is the one where both Mion and Rena go off the hook after our MC starts digging around to the point where they end up essentially threatening him constantly then inject him with something at the end. He kills them both then dies from blood loss after claiming to see Oijushi-sama. Then the next route shows that Mion apparently has a sister called Shion (out of the blue really) and also has a demon within. The demon is let loose after something our MC did (quite silly actually, he just gave a doll to Rena) and she ends up killing both Satoshi and Rikka as well as torture Shion. Eventually she admits to this and being someone who played a role in all deaths so far. She decides to not kill the MC and escapes, but somehow she's found dead in a well, but then she is still apparently alive and presumably kills the MC etc...
I mean, the one thing I can see is that all the routes so far seem to provide more information on the background of the characters and have some things in common in relation to the main story. This would be something like + Show Spoiler +Rena being crazy for Oijushi-sama, Satoshi having an older brother who left (one of the routes spoke of her being abused and her brother killing the abuser), Mion having an interesting background etc...
Edit: As to the animation, tbh, the original animation isn't all bad. There are times though when it feels like the animation is really zoomed in and the quality could be better, but it's an interesting enough watch that I can't complain. I also like the OP quite a bit. It matches the content of the anime quite well.

The first 4 arcs are the question arcs where they provide you clues to solve the mystery. The second 4 arcs are Answer arcs where they provide you the answer to the mystery. The goal is to try and solve it on your own. Just so you know, I find that Higurashi is NOT a solvable mystery under normal circumstances, but you can try your best lol.
You can think of it as different possible events that can occur for the same murder spree. Saying anything more than that will be spoilers, so just keep going.

The original anime legit forgot it had a plot until like the second season (to the point where it has to create an anime-only filler arc just to try and repair the damage), and completely misses the point on several fronts (it pretty much half-asses the more light-hearted stuff, and just says 'fuck it' with all the introspection and any sense of mystery).
To answer your question with no spoilers, Higurashi is actually a mystery story, and you're supposed to try and solve it. To answer with minor spoilers, + Show Spoiler +there is a time loop going on . If you want a major-spoilers answer I can give one as well, but that would defeat the purpose of the VN imo.

It doesn't really inspire confidence if the first episode is so wonky and seems to follow the previous anime first episode.

You can think of it as different possible events that can occur for the same murder spree. Saying anything more than that will be spoilers, so just keep going. I was wondering what you meant by that but I think I see it after having finished the anime. It all feels like a cluster of randomness to a degree: + Show Spoiler +What with the MC dying in 2/3 arcs (he supposedly survived the gas one). Essentially, this is what I got around the time I started the answer arcs: that someone is committing the murders likely to maintain the worship of Oyashiro-sama and that it's quite likely the three families with Sonozaki family being at the head of it all. I felt like they made this quite clear somewhat in those arcs. Also, the swamp or w/e where Kei dumped Satoko's uncle's bike after he killed him might have a role since they talked about some gas killing all the residents in the third arc (or was it second) and its name too (ogre swamp or w/e). On top of that, something to do with people being ogres. That's as far as I went though.
Gas or w/e? -> people become like ogres (violent)? -> people killed? (three families) -> somehow related to Oyashiro-sama worship altogether and of course, the history of the town (made clear in the second arc).
Also, I could fit somewhat everything together except Rena. Came out of nowhere and apparently saw Oyashiro-sama which is why she moved back. Likewise, they showed that she was hiding something in the first episode, but i could never figure out how her seeing Oyashiro-sama fit the idea that he is infact a doctor or w/e that the answer arcs alluded to.
The confusing part was trying to decipher what all those question arcs were. I figured that they were all canon to a degree rather than providing some key info that you had to piece together from the different ones. Also, that third arc with Shion was just crazy. I think that was the weirdest thing I've ever seen in anime in recent years. Just came out of left field for me: + Show Spoiler +Shion just went batshit insane from her usual upbeat self and then proceeds to kill Yoyou, Kimiyoshi, Rika (well, technically suicide), torturing Satoko to death and mentally scarring Mion for life before throwing her over the edge. Then finally killing Keichii but falling and dying herself. Was so unexpected. When they showed this in another arc, it made it seem like Mion actually survived and was the one who went insane.
All in all, an interesting watch. I still feel like part of the story is missing though. The ending is lukewarm to me at best. I might end up watching Kai to see if I get more answers to my questions.
edit: also: + Show Spoiler +takao being stuffed into a barrel and immolated? what? that came out of left field too. I'm still not sure how that plays a role aside from just a random curse+murder pair with Tomitake. edit2: + Show Spoiler +also remembered the part where Kei remembers that he killed Rena and Mion which means that what, this took in a separate timeline or alternate universe but he somehow has knowledge of it. Rika also confirmed this somewhat with her next comment so this was confusing lol.

Second season being Kai I presume? What was the anime-only filler arc you were talking about? (assuming this is the first 24 episodes and not Kai or further since I haven't watched them yet).

Rika also confirmed this somewhat with her next comment so this was confusing lol. + Show Spoiler +All the different arcs are different loops of the same event. They are actually time looping, but they have the same mastermind/cause for the murders. The anime original was added in Higurashi Kai, because they skipped too much content, and had to add them back up somehow to make sense of things lol.
In the game "Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni", the question arcs are supposed to be: Onikakushi Watanagashi Tatarigoroshi Himatsubushi
The answer arcs from "Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni Kai" are: Meakashi Tsumihoroboshi Minagoroshi Matsuribayashi
They added Meakashi and Tsumihoroboshi into the first season, and then added the original content in the second season to try and fill in the holes that they skipped. The author pretty much went, "Hey, you missed all these things that are pretty important to the plot, do it again." And that's how the anime original content Yakusamashi was born.
+ Show Spoiler +I think you are talking about Meakashi where they reveal that Shion is actually the one who goes crazy in Watanagashi. Things occur slightly differently for those 2 arcs, but this is really the part where they start showing you the answers to the mystery. Here you find out that Mion never goes crazy, it's actually Shion who does. Just keep watching and see if you are right about your guesses. That's really the fun part about Higurashi and Umineko, making guesses and see if you are correct.

Higurashi Gou (the new anime) - They are obviously giving us a new mystery to solve this time. + Show Spoiler [Episode 3] +Rule Y has been broken with Tomitake not dying, but going missing instead. The question is who was responsible for the change? Did Rika or Rena or someone else do something different to change things like killing Takano Miyo and rescuing Tomitake? Or was that a natural occurrence caused by a change in the game board introduced by Featherine?

I'm generalizing here a bit but Deen fans seem to be complaining about the most trivial things like art style, animation, and how they're just repeating things in a worse way. If you can't even see how different this anime is from the original Higurashi story, what is there to discuss?
@Bigfan If you've finished the first season, you should already know that + Show Spoiler +People going crazy is the work of Hinamizawa Syndrome which is a parasite that can only survive in Hinamizawa. This is the cause of Oyashiro-sama's curse. When people leave Hinamizawa for a long time, it activates the parasite and causes people to hallucinate. There are a couple other things that activate it, but I forgot. This is why Rena was forced to move back to Hinamizawa when she started hallucinating about Oyashiro-sama.
I don't remember specifically how they handled it in the anime, but Tsumihoroboshi should've covered that. That is why Rika was trying to inject Shion (in her arc) and Rena with some strange medicine. She was trying to save them, but due to their hallucinations, they thought she was doing something weird and tried to kill her.
For the gas, at the end of each arc, the official news is that Hinamizawa was destroyed by volcanic gas.

Its been a while since I watched the Deen dumpster fire, but I'm pretty sure the first season of the anime actually forgot to cover most of the stuff you posted in those spoilers, since it forgot it has a plot. And its part of the reason the first arc of Higurashi Kai exists.

Tbh, I had no problems watching the anime. I know there was complaints about the animation and such, but it honestly felt just fine to me. I was more interested in seeing how things develop and come to my own conclusion. I plan to watch Kai to see what happens considering it seems like a part of the original anime was anime-only (which arc was this btw?).
Also, that new Majo no Tabitabi anime is rattling some watchers with the latest episode. It's an interesting anime where the MC is an observer much like Kino no Tabi (read, haven't watched kino yet). This might be interesting to some folks here who liked that anime. Miragee, this might be your type of anime.

Eh. Despite the controversy, there's not actually much substance to the episode. The thing with Kino is that even when it was moralizing, at least it had something novel going on. The way Majo no Tabitabi presents itself comes off as comical rather than thought provoking. + Show Spoiler [For instance] +What was the point of the flower story?

TLADT24917 Posts
I disagree. I feel like the episode had a pretty reasonable conclusion overall when you consider Elaina's statement at the end and had aspects of it that can be discussed. I haven't watched Kino so as mentioned above, I can't speak to the validity of the comparison but I have seen enough users make the connection that I thought it was worth sharing. In terms of the episode and the lesson behind it, there were many posters that went into depth on this on MAL, but seeing as that thread has a lot of posts, I'm gonna link the first post that I found that brushes the surface of what it was about: https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1870322&show=100#msg60940341
I also disagree with the comical part. + Show Spoiler +The flower bit was a bit odd, but an act of kindness that spiraled out of control. You could argue just how much involvement she had and how much should she have helped, whether the guard who was affected by her flower bouquet or in regards to the flower field etc... The second story about Nino is probably the most thought provoking one imo because it's not a black and white situation when you consider the country she's in, their laws as well as who our MC is as well as her own duties and promises to her parents etc... I could write more, but I'd rather be an observer in this case ^^ Also, link between the first and second story: https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1870322&show=350#msg60953404

+ Show Spoiler +I'm actually okay with the second half of the episode. Her involvement, or lack thereof, is fine.
My main complaint is that I think presentation and setup for the flower story sucked, and the payoff wasn't worth the time they spent on it. Like... we learn about the nature of the flowers then it cuts straight to the guy in the field. Felt awfully rushed. To me this is the kind of direction that kills the tone of a show.
I read the relevant manga chapter afterwards and it fleshed out the details a fair bit more. Dunno what the LN does.

I suppose it depends whether you can stand typical Japanese plotless aimless wandering "value is in the journey not the story style" or not. If you haven't watched the first 2 episodes, the chances are is that you wouldn't be watching the 3rd anyways.

Arc-wise, Higurashi S1 has chapters 1-6, and thenHigurashi Kai has an anime-original arc to attempt plot damage control, then chapters 7-8 (which are the concluding arcs).
