Don't make life harder than it needs to be for no reason at all. Renault pushed their shit to the absolute limit and exceeded it because of a situation they didn't anticipate. If they had a safety buffer this wouldn't have happened. I'd rather they fine Renault for being whiny idiots about their own fuck up.

A reasonable "punishment" would have been to delete the lap he "cheated" on, which was the slowest of the two qualifying laps anyways.

Again, it is a measurable decision that has fixed and definite regulations, not "must leave space and respect the combatant", but "cannot exceed value x". They exceeded value x, there is evidence of it and that should be an end of it. It sucks, especially for Ric, but I much rather have this, than have stewards try to start interpreting about if the illegal car was actually only illegal at a point where it didn't matter. Meanwhile this race is now going to suck except for the pit stops, an untimely safety car or possible tyre degradation isn't it? Kind of a shame, we've been so spoiled by action recently

Kind of a shame, we've been so spoiled by action recently There are no rules against having a car that could potentially become illegal under certain circumstances like a crash. That wouldn't make any sense. The car is illegal when it does something illegal. I don't care if they had swapped cars and ran the first lap with a Fiat Punto, it doesn't make sense to void the next qualifying lap because of it. This is back to the argument that happened last year when Vettel had to weigh his car after not finishing a qualifying lap and returning early. What's the point? It doesn't matter the lick if his car is underweight for a lap that doesn't matter. I would have thought it was harsh if it had happened on his actual qualifying lap, but it's much harsher when it happened on a lap that didn't matter anyways. I'm also curious why you're calling them whining idiots for telling their side of what happened. It feels like you have something against them for whatever reason. edit: Also, yes, this race is going to suck. I had forgotten that this track is near impossible to overtake on.

Of course there are rules about that. The rule is that the MGU-K cannot exceed x number of revs, they exceeded this number x. There was no carsh, the part wasn't damaged or destroyed and had to be replaced. The car continued on without any issue whatsoever, which clearly makes the bump over the curbs a normal racing incident where the number x cannot be exceeded. I don't have a grudge against Renault, well except that their idiocy continues to screw over one of the most likable drivers of the field. I'm just annoyed that instead of accepting that they fucked up, took responsibility and fixed the problem, they whined and played the victim and managed to create a rule controversy about something that should absolutely not be up for discussion. Seems stupid by Merc, unless they have some hard numbers about tyre degragation at the end of the race

They probably thought Vettel was in danger of being stuck in traffic. edit: Wow, that overtake was..dumb. Nearly crashing into people when you're in the lead is not the way to keep it

On hindsight, he may have waited but I'm thankful for the action Gio did a great job as a Ferrari no 3 driver in blocking the pack. edit: oh hey. SAFETY CARRRRRR Russel hit the wall thanks to Grosjean lol And there goes the 2 Racing points =/
