A new RTS (the beta is free on steam) that Artosis is streaming right now.
https://www.twitch.tv/artosis
Anyone have any opinions on it?
Some of the people who made it went to the same university as me, so I'm kind of amazed that they got Artosis to stream it.
I haven't played it yet myself, but I'm gonna try to give some of my impressions tomorrow.

It does Warcraft 3, it looks like a mod for Starcraft 2. Cheap as shit
|
imo it looks more like a polished aoe2.
i don't get the negativity. RTS shouldn't care too much for graphics but for gameplay and fun!

watching it but the discussion forums claim there's only one playable race/faction so could be a bit one dimensional.

Hmm from watching twitch, this reminds me of a bit of a mix of Warcraft 3 and Armies of Exigo, but lite. If it truly will be just one faction, the game will get figured out incredibly fast and the meta will become stale IMO. I'm gonna keep an eye on this, but without much hope. Don't think this will be any groundbreaking RTS and I'm not even sure it aspires to be one...

IMO it's held back by:
- lack of interface art. The 3d models and terrain are nicely detailed but the game interface is so plain.
- unit models being too dark (lack of lighting?) and camouflaging too easily into the background
- neon green unit/building selection circles being too bright and gaudy, needs to be decreased in opacity (add partial transparency)
- lack of a map editor
|
I think gameplay-wise it looks decent, but it's lacking visually imo. Personally I don't mind at all, but I don't know if it's going to be as easily marketable in this day and age.
Although, maybe the target demographic is already set with the mindset of RTS being a quite niche genre in 2019 so I can understand that I suppose.

The sound effects and voices are pretty nice. The terrain looks good enough but the unit and building models are really bland, lack detail and look bad from above.
I like the engine responsiveness, it works well.
Biggest issue is lack of content though, theres hardly any units in this game and no factions/races? I don't understand how they would release it as a finished game like this...

they .. dont ? i mean its a beta

Well release date is Feb 21 so I am assuming beta=game pretty much.

I find it funny they use some sc2 maps Whirlwind and Xelnaga Caverns. They could have chosen a better map than Xelnaga caverns tho...

This game looks way too much like a WarCraft clone, it seems you just spam one unit + a hero then kill monsters around the map to gain experience / levels then A move and hit AOE damage in between, seems very bland to me, I am always willing to try out a new RTS though. Even Armies of Exigo seems better than this though...

Every now and then, a new RTS game pops up. But I think this shows why RTS has fallen out of favour. This seems like a clone of old gameplay. What aspect of this game is better or unique or innovative to what we have already seen? Of course, I understand this may not be the ambition of the creator. But ever since the release of SC BW, I have been interested in seeing how game developers think they can make RTS games more fun or more interesting.
I think single player and story wise a hero with XP gain and killing creeps was a very good idea. And eventually that even led to LoL and HoN. But from the multiplayer point of view, it seems like SC BW was the end of the road and no game dev has ever been able to come up with something that is an improvement. Which is really strange.
There also seems like a total lack of vision and a lack of a philosophical attitude at what makes an interesting multiplayer game. Ever since SC BW, people lament of RTS being a 'clickfest', the game only being fun if you are a 'no life Korean with uber micro'. But besides a huge amount of complaints, and a huge amount of complaints on balance in SC2, interesting videos about what make a good RTS engine like the video by LaLush, no interesting idea has been successfully implemented by game devs.
I think devs should go into a completely abstract RTS game where you focus purely on gameplay mechanics, and ignore any lore constraints. And then try to 'solve' every major 'problem slash complaint' raised by (non-)RTS game players. Maybe I have endless creativity and genius, but I have several ideas that seem at least worth exploring.

Allright, I've managed to play it myself a little now.
I kinda like the way the units move. Not as fluid and unnatural as SC2.
But the content really is the game's weak point. I mean, I get why they didn't have the resources to balance many different races, but they could have added tech branches, or something similar to AoE's cultural units to add variety.

A lot of the time that people try this, they make a game that neither the original players nor the non-players actually like.

On steam there are some interesting games with new ideas regarding RTS.
Maybe check out Frostpunk or Northguard

Anyone playing this?
I bought it today, it released 8 hours ago and there's almost no players. Honestly it's a pretty fun RTS, I'm surprised so few people heard of it.
Try it out!
